The area was the center of political and cultural life in Kathmandu, and it has served as the royal palace, where kings were crowned and religious ceremonies took place. Notable structures in the square include the Hanuman Dhoka Palace, the Taleju Temple, and the Jagannath Temple.

Over time, the square has been a site of historic events, and even though some parts were damaged by the 2015 earthquake, it remains a UNESCO World Heritage site and a major cultural hub for both locals and visitors.
