Alpaca or llama - what's the difference? 🦙🦙🦙

At the end of our farm tour, you get the opportunity to meet our curious alpacas, and one of the most common questions we are asked is what is the difference between alpacas and llamas? 🤔

Alpacas and llamas both originate from South America and are both members of the camelid family, but there are a few differences between them! 🐪🐫 Llamas are larger in size with longer faces than alpacas, and have two layers of fleece instead of one!

Stay tuned for more fun facts about our animals next week! ✨✨✨

Merino sheep are prized for their luxuriously soft wool but did you also know that they are also known for their flocking instinct? 🐑🐑🐑

Flocking means that sheep like to stick together in close-knit groups, for their safety and security and it means they have strong social bonds too! 🌟🌻✨

So next time you see a fluffy merino sheep, remember it's not just about the wool! Their strong social bond is a fascinating adaptation that has helped them thrive for centuries! 🐑

Lake Tekapo Farm Tours

Established in 2018 by local long-term Tekapo family, Lake Tekapo Farm Tours focuses on providing authentic Kiwi experiences. Tours operate on wide open spaces of 25,000 acres (10,117 hectares) over two amazing high country farms, the historic Mt. John and Balmoral Stations. Let our wonderful staff take care of you as you explore the legendary Mackenzie Country and marvel at the mountains and alpine scenery, just like John Mackenzie did himself in 1850 when our region was settled.
