Great news on Rangitira Chair Lift, a huge thank you to the WHL team and staff for finally restoring up hill access on foot at any time (with a valid ticket) and for helping with down options by arrangement.

This means club members can, pop down to collect the stores, leave gear at the hut and walk down after the weekend, or more easily access Happy Valley for those who are learning!

Ski club newsletter May 2025

Some Certainty Ahead!

Finally we have an operator and our future for the next decade is assured! Whakapapa Holdings have a concession to operate the ski field for the next 10years.

It’s has been a long and difficult road to get to this place, where the passion of certain groups out stripped reality. However, we all want the same outcome, a ski field operator who will lead a team of excellent dedicated locals to operate the ski field for all of us!

After great promise in the previous decade we have arrived at this point. Looking back, 2018 saw likely the best ski season in living memory, with weekly snowfalls from June to November, only 6 closed days the entire season and every weekend fine! The following year offered lots of promise and a new Gondala, but with 40 closed days reality bit, then COVID lockdowns, the Copland experience and the over investment and the aggressive behaviour towards the Clubs. The bookable car parking debacle, a number of poor snow seasons, no parking a the bottom of the mountain in winter, the closure of the Chateau, passionate groups pulling in different directions but all wanting the same out come and we arrive at 2025.

Where am I going with all this, the mountain and the clubs on Whakapapa, and your club, has been the only constant through years of change and we have thrived during the last 75 plus years! We are the second oldest club on the mountain.

The club has been built twice, we have had three new fire places, a couple of extensive refits, generations of families have passed through, we have created the best of memories for our families and friends. Our children have grown up there, they learnt how to ski ride and share. We have been incredibly lucky to have such a place we can call our own to pass on the next generation.

But right now we are in the most critical stage of the clubs life and this will likely be the same at a lot of other clubs across the mountain.

With new life finally being breathed into the field, we also need to breathe new life into our club. It needs to become financially stable again.

We need new membership, we need old members coming back. We need you to support the ski field and the club by simply turning up and bringing your friends to do what we love to do, skiing and riding.

If you do nothing this season and we have a bad season this could be our last without some type of financial input from our members, covid, a couple of poor season has severely impacted our financial reserves.

If we will run out of funds everything you have gained over the past generations will be lost to the future generations and what you have given to your family, your children and grandchildren, and your friends will be lost forever. A distant memory. We say bu**er that, what can you do? Simple…cashflow is king!

Renew your membership subscriptions.
Get your friends to join.

Organise a weekend at the club with your friends, there are no restrictions (bring non members). Booking is, first in first served.

See if your friends and their friends want to use the club even as non members.

Buy a season pass and get committed.

Transfer your life pass to some else who will take up the three season pass offer if you don’t want it.

Use the club over summer! Not just in winter.

So let’s see you back at the place this winter which has given us all so much…

Whakapapa’s future just got real.

Whakapapa Holdings Limited (WHL) has — with pride and elation — received its new concession to operate Whakapapa Ski Area.

More than a step forward — this is the breakthrough we’ve been waiting for. “This is the moment the team has been working toward for two and a half years,” says WHL Director Tom Elworthy. “The concession doesn’t just represent progress — it marks a new starting point. It gives us the certainty we’ve been missing, and everything flows from here. Whakapapa has a future — and it starts now.”

The concession approval enables WHL to complete the final steps toward ownership. The transaction process is well underway and expected to conclude shortly.

More updates soon — including 2025 season passes, opening dates, and what’s in store for winter.

Newsletter March 2025

We hope you all are having a great summer! As I write this update, things are starting to look better! We do believe the long-term future of the mountain is looking better, the signs are starting to look good, and there will definitely be skiing at Mt Ruapehu and for us at Whakapapa this year!

Key announcement: Work Party 29th & Sunday 30th of March

Looking ahead to this season
Firstly, Whakapapa Holdings are in the stages of finalising a concession to operate Whakapapa Ski field for the next 10 years. It will be all go this season! The Season Pass offering will be on the Wakapapa website in April for the 2025 season. Please keep an eye out for when they go on sale as it will be only for a limited time.

So why buy a season pass?
Firstly, if you ski on day passes at weekends for a family of four (2 adults and 2 kids) you will burn $600 on adult day passes and $300 on kids passes alone. So, the season pass makes sense if you intend to ski more than two weekends over the entire season, July till October.

Lastly, there is a very strong desire for Mt Ruapehu to be successful in the winter season, as it draws more than $100 million annually to the local economy and provides over 650 full time jobs across the industry and the central North Island. Season pass holders deliver a critical spend which support these communities, from the local gas station to the clubs on the mountain.

Life Pass Holders, can transfer your life pass to a 3 season pass (2055, 2027 & 2027) for $999 or you can transfer your life pass rights to someone for free!
If you have a life pass and no longer wish to use it, please give the transfer rights to the club (it is free) and we will find someone who will take up the pass offer for 3 seasons at $999. Any life pass holder can transfer their rights to another person to purchase a 3 season pass for $999 or only $333 per year for three seasons! You pay half this year and the balance next year and nothing in the 3rd year. So, if you no longer use your Life Pass please contact the club as we will find someone in the club or outside of the club to take up the offer. A great way to give back to the mountain and the next generation of skiers!

Working Party Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th of March
We know it is short notice, but the ski club has one working bee this year where we really need your help. We have quite a few small jobs to do to get ready for the season.

With a good turn out there will be plenty of time to explore the mountain if you wish, or just sit and relax outside the hut in the sun with a refreshing drink!

This working bee will cover general hut maintenance such as washing and cleaning the place from top to bottom to prepare for the season. We will have all the non-perishable food stores coming up as well and will be taking up a 4x4 vehicle.

Plan is to meet at 8am, at the Top of the Bruce on Saturday, load up the stores into the 4x4 and then walk up the hill from there, or you could make your way up to the ski club at your leisure.

As always, the added incentive, if you attend a work party you will get preferential access to bookings. We will open the bookings early for you to secure key dates in school holidays and
for other weekends throughout the season!

At the work party, the club will look after your accommodation, food and provide a few cold refreshments, so you just need to turn up! All the maintenance materials and equipment will be provided.

What to bring
We suggest good sturdy footwear, such as tramping boots (or similar) to walk up to the hut. The walk takes around 40-60 minutes depending on fitness levels. Work gloves, the material gloves with light rubberised palms are best, especially for those of us with office hands (Mitre 10 or Bunnings sells them). Clear safety glasses are useful, and old work clothes, a dust mask is also handy. A back pack and a sleeping bag or sheets if you are staying over and some snacks.

If you can attend, please notify us by email at, [email protected] .

Your club committee will be there at the working bee!

Subscriptions
More than ever, we need your support to keep the club going. We will be sending out the annual subs notice shortly, please go online and join the club again. The uncertainly is over and we have anew operator in the wings. Remember, the Mountain is there, the skiing and riding is awesome. So please commit to the club and the season again. It promises to the be a beauty

75th year Anniversary Celebrations 2024….so just like the Olympics it will be in 2025!
It is our clubs 75th year Anniversary (76 years) in 2025 and we are determined it will not be our last! We will be arranging a few events throughout the year, and you are more than welcome to hold your own events through the season.

Thanks to you all in advance on behalf of the committee. If you have any questions or need more information please call Gordy Horsley, Club President on 0274316348.

Brilliant News we have an operator!!!!

“Māku te ra e tō ana; kei a koe te urunga ake o te rā”

“Let mine be the setting sun; yours is the dawning of a new day"

- Whakataukī, Māori proverb

Today we share a second and monumental step into winter 2025 – a likely new owner of Whakapapa, Mt Ruapehu.

Cabinet yesterday pledged to support Whakapapa Holdings Limited (WHL) in its endeavour to purchase Whakapapa ahead of the 2025 winter season. Kānoa - the regional economic development unit - said that this gives “certainty to the local communities and businesses in the district that Whakapapa will open in 2025”.

An interminable 791 days have passed since voluntary administrators were appointed to Ruapehu Alpine Lifts. This update, by far, the best news that Whakapapa's community has received in this time. CE Travis Donoghue said that today brought elation to the entire Whakapapa team, who carry excitement to join WHL in a renewed future for the ski area.

A condition of the purchase of Whakapapa remains the need to obtain a concession to operate from the Minister of Conservation. Expect a fourth step into winter 2025 to be announced on this in due course.

And yes, we missed a third step! We expect to be in a position to share Whakapapa's 2025 winter product and pricing ahead of Christmas 🎄
