✈️ FLIGHT REVIEW ✈️

✨ Christchurch to Fiji on Fiji Airways A330 ✨

Pros:
1. The onboard crew were incredible, the attention to detail was out of this world, never had an empty glass and always with that Fijian smile - the best crew I think we’ve ever had on a plane! 🙌🏻
2. We were lucky enough to pay for an upgrade at the airport and experience their business class seats and the Manaia Lounge which was nice and relaxing. Even managed time to have a quick pre-flight shower between the glasses of bubbles!
3. The food on board was incredible, fresh and tasty! I had the pasta while Martin had the flatbread and both enjoyed it!

Cons:
1. Fiji Airways obviously contracts out their Christchurch ground crew and honestly, they were a bit rude and unhelpful and just didn’t seem like they wanted to be there. Which is shame given how good the onboard crew and lounge attendants are!
2. The flight was delayed significantly, originally due to depart at 1pm we didn’t leave until midnight meaning we didn’t get to our accommodation until 5am - such are the burdens of travel, sometimes there are delays.
3. Due to the delay, we arrived in Fiji at what seemed like rush hour, five or so flights landed within an hour of each other and anyone who’s been to Fiji before knows that completely fills the arrival hall, not really where you want to be at 3am in the morning!

Final thoughts:
Despite a few hiccups out of the airlines control it was a great journey! I would highly recommend Fiji Airways business class, once you’re onboard it is like an extension of being on the islands from the amazing crew, fresh food and excellent service! 🥰🇫🇯

DAY TWO OF THE FIJI MATAI FAMIL!

We left Port Denerau and caught the Yasawa Flyer to Barefoot Kuata where we spend a few hours snorkelling with reef sharks and hundreds of colourful reef fish (life changing experience but have zero photos because I was too busy in the moment to sort the logistics!). Afterwards we headed to Octopus Resort where we spent some time in the (very deep - almost 3m deep) pool and had a lovely sunset dinner, time for bed to explore more of the Yasawa Islands tomorrow! 🇫🇯😍

A few years ago, I was lucky enough to be on a Topdeck Travel tour that travelled around some of the Thai islands.

My three top tips for travelling to Koh Samui are:

1. Do not rush - don’t let the fact it is an island fool you, there is plenty to see and do in Koh Samui. I would recommend at least five days to really find your groove here!

2. Pack your own sunscreen - sunscreen in Kohl’s Samui is at a premium, save yourself some extra spending money by packing your own!

3. Research the area that best suits your vibe - Kohl’s Samui caters to almost every kind of tourist so it’s important to figure out what you’re after before you go and book accommodation in the right place.

DO NOT FLY YOUR KITE HERE! 🪁🇬🇧

Did you know? It’s illegal to fly a kite in most areas of London and to violate this law can get you a £500 fine! 😱💷

I’ve been lucky enough to visit London on a few occasions and each time I’ve found something or somewhere new to explore!

My top three tips for visiting London are:

1. PRE-BOOK, PRE-BOOK, PRE-BOOK - even the free attractions, you should pre-book as it gives you an allocated entry time so you’re not waiting in line for hours on end.

2. PICNIC IN HYDE PARK - although London is a mega city with skyscrapers, I would highly recommend taking some ‘you-time’, grabbing some food (Pret, anyone?) and having a picnic in Hyde Park. There’s enough space to find our own little corner to enjoy!

3. HEAD INTO THE CLOUDS - with such an impressive skyline, it would be a shame not to get an aerial view of London. My top recommendation is to go up the Sky Garden, it is more spacious than the Shard and you can even have dinner up there (reservation is required).

950 MILLION YEARS OF MISSING ROCKS?! 🇺🇸🪨

Did you know? The Grand Canyon offers the most visible example of a worldwide geological phenomenon called the Great Uncomformity, in which 250 million-year-old rock is back-to-back with 1.2 billion-year-old rock. That’s hundreds of millions of years of mystery right there!

A few years ago, I was able to visit this incredible landscape as part of a Topdeck Travel tour around the Western United States. After that taste test, I would love to go back and try some of the longer trails!

My top tips for visiting the Grand Canyon are:

1. Research what rim is best for you - the Grand Canyon is HUGE! The South Rim is recommended for first-timers as it has many of the iconic viewpoints and more accessible ammenities than the other three areas.

2. Don’t try to reach the bottom in a day - while on our trip, on of the Topdeckers underestimated how long it would take to get to the bottom of the canyon and back, needless to say we ended up staying an extra few hours (eight, I believe) for them to be brought back up by rangers.

3. Arrive before 9am - arrive any later than that and you might miss out on a car park and also have to battle the crowds for the best views!

NOTHING TALLER THAN A COCONUT TREE! 🌏🥥🌴🇨🇰

Did you know? In Rarotonga, no building can be taller than a coconut tree? Protecting the island from high rise developments and keeping it a local paradise! 🏝️☀️🐚

In October 2022, my family and I headed to the largest island of the Cook Islands group, Rarotonga, to celebrate my sister’s 30th and my dad’s 60th. It was incredible and now I’m counting down the days until we can go back to this island paradise.

My top three tips for Raro are:

1. Rent a car or scooter - the island has a ring road which takes around 45 multimeters to loop without stopping, but I can guarantee you’ll want to stop along the way! There is a bus service however it runs on island time like most things in the Pacific.

2. Learn some Cook Island Māori phrases - Cook Islands are rightfully proud of their home and culture. Be a respectful tourist and learn some basic phrases such as ‘kia orana’ (hello), ‘meitaki’ (thanks) and ‘aere ra’ (goodbye) and show your gratitude to this incredible place.

3. Travel during the dry season - unlike New Zealand, the Cook Islands have two seasons instead of four, the wet and dry seasons. The dry season is during the New Zealand winter months, this is when you’re going to get the best weather and the least amount of rain!

THE WORLD’S VERY FIRST MILLION PERSON CITY! 🌍🇮🇹

All the way back in 133BC, it was recorded that Rome’s population surpasses one million people, the first city to do so in recorded history! In June 2023, I was lucky enough to have a whirlwind visit to Rome, Italy! We managed to eat, drink and explore the 3,000 years of history over three days and we can’t wait to go back! 🍕🍝🥂🍹

My top three tips for Rome are:

1. Explore the side streets - we found so many cute and incredibly delicious restaurants that were tucked away. Finding these hidden gems also saved us a lot of money because they’re much cheaper than the tourist traps on the main streets!

2. Pre-book to avoid queues! Rome is notorious for some of the longest queues for attractions so when you rebook you can skip a lot of waiting so you make the most of your time away.

3. Wear comfortable shoes! You WILL walk around a lot, we covered 20kms a day because there is just that much to see, make sure you wear comfortable shoes to avoid cutting your adventures short!

AN ANCIENT TREASURE THAT WAS HIDDEN FOR OVER FOUR CENTURIES! 🌎🇵🇪

The Inca Empire burnt the forest surrounding Machu Picchu in the hope of obscuring the paths which worked so successfully it remained undiscovered for over 400 years! A few years ago, I was fortunate enough to travel to Peru to hike the Inca Trail and discover this world wonder and explore the Peruvian side of the Amazon Rainforest.

My top three tips for Cusco, Inca Trail and Peruvian Amazon Rainforest are:

1. Make sure you spend some time learning about the traditional Incan history, Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire and by simply walking the streets you can travel back in time to see the influence of the Incan people and also the impact from the Spanish invasion.

2. There are limited permits for the Inca Trail, so get in quick! I would highly recommend booking a tour, we travelled with Intrepid Travel, and that made it easy so we could focus on experiences rather than logistics.

3. Beware of the altitude - it does not discriminate whether you’re young or old, fit or unfit. Allow yourself some time to adjust, we spent three days in Cusco which really helped us avoid altitude sickness!

THE LAND OF FIRE, ICE…& ELVES?! 🌍🇮🇸🔥❄️🧝‍♂️

Did you know that 54% of Icelanders believe in elves? In June 2023, I was fortunate enough to road trip around the magical island of Iceland for 8 days, chasing the midnight sun!

My top 3 tips are:

1. Check opening times - if you’re used to standard 9 to 5 business hours for supermarkets and stores, you might be in for a surprise in Iceland. We tried to get a morning coffee but outside of Reykjavík most places open around 12 for a few hours. My advice, if you see an open shop, take advantage!

2. Budget for sight-seeing as well as food! Although Iceland’s isolation has allowed its beauty to flourish, it also means food is much more expensive that other destinations as it’s mostly imported and also to preserve the main tourist attractions there is usually a charge to visit (either the attraction itself or the carpark).

3. Choose the season carefully - Iceland goes from 24 hours of sun a day to complete darkness depending on what time you visit (both offer different advantages so it depends what you want to see or do most - explore in the midnight sun or chase the Northern Lights?)
