Ever driven past the Mataura Valley Milk plant and wondered what’s happening inside? We sure did!⁣

So, we jumped at the chance to join the Southland Business Chamber for a tour of the milk plant. It was fascinating to see how milk sourced from one of the finest grass-producing regions in the world, Southland, New Zealand, gets transformed into exceptional nutrition for a growing world. ⁣
⁣
The tour revealed what goes on behind closed doors and just how automated the process of turning raw milk into powder truly is. It was well worth the visit! ⁣

Ah, the festive season! It's that time of year when businesses ramp up their entertainment spending. But before you get too carried away with the holiday cheer, let's talk about how to handle GST and tax deductions for all your merrymaking.⁣⁣
⁣
⁣⁣⁣100% Deductible and Fringe Benefit Tax - Free: If the entertainment is purely business-related, like meals while traveling for work or a function that promotes your business, you're in the clear. No FBT, and it's fully deductible. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
50% Deductible and Fringe Benefit Tax - Free: If the entertainment isn't entirely business-related, such as Christmas staff parties or social events for employees, then it's only 50% deductible. Still no FBT, but you can't claim the full amount. ⁣⁣
⁣
⁣⁣⁣Subject to FBT: If gifts are given to employees because of the work, they do i.e. gift cards for good performance will be 100% deductible however may be subject to FBT⁣⁣

The future of the next generation of Otago/Southland Regional Young Farmers is looking bright. ⁣

Hammond Davidson’s Amanda and Ranel recently put together an outstanding module for the District's Young Farmer competition in Balfour. The module aimed to test young farmers on their understanding of fundamental accounting principles, crucial for launching and managing their own businesses. It was also fantastic to reconnect with our friends at Resolution Farm Management who were running a station as well.⁣

The Southland Rural Support Trust have been front and centre with the recent adverse weather event our area experienced through the spring. The effects of that are on going for our local people. The Southland Rural Support Trust team were and still are there, at the end of an email or phone line.
Today they hosted a Rural Professionals Breakfast in Gore.

Each year Hammond Davidson do Christmas donations to charities of our staff members choice.
This year we decided to consolidate our donations and put it towards a very worthy organisation - Southland Rural Support Trust

Recently, Emma and Justine took part in an Essential Leadership Skills course organised by the Southland Business Chamber.They both came away equipped with a fantastic set of new skills having covered everything from working styles, personality, building effective communication skills, delegation, coaching skills and dealing with conflict.
