One of the features of our walk is the spring called Whangapipiro, more commonly known as the Rachel Spring, or Madame Rachel. It was named after a con-woman in London who made fake cosmetics allegedly using materials from around the world. She had no connection whatsoever to Rotorua but her story was well covered in all the New Zealand newspapers. So she was famous enough for the spring to be called after her. Read this for more info:

Here is a bit about our new Historic walking tour:

Rotorua is famous for its iconic Bath House which was based on a European style luxury spa. Our historic walk will take you on a journey through time from the “howling wilderness” of Sulphur Point to the new luxury Wai Ariki Spa on the lakefront, with everything in between. Learn about the special properties of the waters around Government Gardens and the treatments offered in the various institutions that have existed over time in the
Gardens. Using historic photographs our guides will bring to life the risks and remedies taken by patients keen to ‘take the cure’ in Rotorua. You will also learn about the natural environment around the lakefront and see the rare bird colony that exists there.

This walk takes 1.5 hours and is about 2.5km long with 2 toilet stops. It is not a circular walk so you may need to return to the beginning or another location. Please be sure you are able to undertake the walk before you book, as there aren't a lot of places to sit along the way. We take a maximum of 6 people on any walk and children must be over 10 years.
