It's about time that you came for a visit to Holiday n Taupo come and enjoy our houses after your day on the slopes

We have had an incredible amount of snow over the last week. This early-season snowfall is something we have not witnessed in years. The entire team on both ski areas have had to overcome challenging conditions, including de-icing and strong winds, but we have emerged mostly unscathed.

Our Whakapapa whānau are thrilled that Happy Valley is fully open, (a rarity for this early in the season). With favourable snowmaking temperatures forecasted, we also think that the Rangatira Chair and the Rockgarden Trail will be open for your enjoyment at some stage tomorrow! Push work in the Valley is progressing. The groomers have a T-line, load, and unloads well under way. Another snowfall would help finish off this work, along with filling in the gullies in Pinnacle Valley and down through the Highway. We have also had cats to the top of the Knoll, and out to the top of the West Ridge. At this stage more snowmaking and further snow would be ideal.

Our Tūroa team are stoked to have the Alpine Meadow beginners area up and running, along with the Parklane and Movenpick lifts, the latter of which debuted today!
The crew is aiming to get the Wintergarden, Giant chairlift and the Snowflake Café up and running next. The High Noon Express would follow a little later in the month (weather and conditions permitting).

The good news is that there is more snow in the forecast over the next week.

Milky Way & Gum Nebula over Snowy Mt Taranaki

Story: I'd been wanting to get a shot like this for nearly a year since the end of last winter, and finally the first big dump of snow for the season arrived and it coincided with perfectly clear skies and the opportunity to get the Milky Way lined up over the mountain. I used my narrowband filter to help bring out the faint gum nebula (the large red circular nebula directly above the mountain) and other nebula in this section of the Milky Way (Carina Nebula and Running Chicken Nebula etc). Also in this image is the Southern Cross and green air glow.
It wasn't easy getting this image - nearly 2 hours hiking up the mountain through deep snow with a heavy pack carrying all of my gear and then standing in the freezing cold for several hours shooting - but getting to be under the stars that night was an incredible experience that made it all worthwhile. It's hard to describe how clear the night sky was that night up the mountain, but the image gives you a bit of an idea of how beautiful it was.

Snow times are here

Overnight we saw snow guns at Tūroa kick into gear, producing snow from the Blyth Flat all the way down to the Alpine Meadow, shown in the photo below.

Timely, ahead of our planned opening of Tūroa and the Meadow tomorrow.

While excited to welcome our first manuhiri (guests) back to the , we have to admit, the weather is looking a bit marginal! Regardless, the Alpine Cafe will be open, and the team is aiming to get the Alpine Meadow carpet rolling from 9am. A great opportunity to get up and set the foot back in snow, and meet our team on hand.

For those interested in more info on snowmaking, last night we saw the inversion layer - where it is calm and cool and the warmer air rises - in full play. It was -3 degrees in Ohakune, but +2 degrees at the top of the Parklane. What made the difference last night was the low humidity - we sat at about 11% for the night, allowing us to pump out a good amount of snow. Hoping for more nights like these! (And of course, more of the real stuff too).
