Two weeks’ to go to VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship!

🏊4,038 male and 2,618 female athletes registered to take part (that’s three times as many as a regular IRONMAN event).

🌏98% of the athletes are international with competitors from 119 countries.

🥇2 days of racing - women race on Saturday 14 December and men race on Sunday 15 December.

🙌 120 IRONMAN staff arriving today for set up.

💛About 3,500 volunteers helping (roughly 10% of Taupō District's resident population).

🎁An expected $22 million in local spend (a huge boost to our local economy).

🙋🏽 How will this affect me?

Taupō is going to be bustling as we see more people out and about shopping, eating, enjoying what Taupō offers, and of course, athletes training across our rohe.

There are going to be roads closed before, during and after the event. Check them all out here www.taupo.govt.nz/ironmanroadclosures

🙋🏽 What can I do to get prepared?

📍 Get ready for town to be busy

There will be extra traffic and competitors training in the lead up to the event so plan ahead. Allow yourself extra time to get from A to B and plan your route. Full list of road closures in the lead up to and during the event is available here – www.taupo.govt.nz/ironmanroadclosures

📍 Do your supermarket shop early

Save yourself a job and stock up this week before the bulk of athletes arrive. A lot of them will be self-catering in the lead up to the event, as they will be sticking to a strict race fit diet. If you are a banana lover, you might just want to grab some extra green ones!

📍 Sort your dump run out

Broadlands Road Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre will be closed during the races. The road will be busy with athletes training on the course pre-event too. Best to get that dump run in this week or hold it until after the event!

🙋🏽 How can I get involved?

📍 Start making your supporter signs!

We have a reputation of being the best IRONMAN supporters in the world. The enthusiasm our community brings to this event through volunteering and supporting is legendary. These events could not happen without you – thank you!

Find a great viewing spot along the courses so you don’t miss any of the action - www.ironman.com/im703-world-championship-2024-course

📍 Volunteer

Have some spare time over that weekend and fancy being part of something special? The team at IRONMAN are looking for volunteers to help in different roles throughout the event weekend. Find out more at www.taupo.govt.nz/ironmanvolunteers

📍 Support our local tamariki and rangatahi at the Parade of Nations

Local kids will perform a pōwhiri for around 4,000 international athletes at the Parade of Nations on Thursday 12 December. The Pōwhiri begins at 3.30pm at Te Ātea followed by the epic spectacle of athletes marching with their countries’ flags along Tongariro St to Tongariro North Domain. Not to be missed!

📍 Let the future IRONMAN competitors loose at IRONKIDS and Tuituia Fun Run supported by HOKA

Future IRONMAN athletes can get in on the action on Wednesday 11 December with two very special events.

IRONKIDS has three age categories for 5 to 13 year olds to give it a go. Tuituia Fun Run is for rangatahi aged 14 years and over.

Find out more and register at www.ironman.com/im703-world-championship-2024-athletes

📍 Get the kids writing “With Love from Taupō” letters to the triathletes

We need you Taupō rohe kids! Can you write a personal message of support to IRONMAN competitors, sharing local knowledge on the best things to do in the Taupō District? These letters are always a huge hit with the athletes. With more athletes competing this year, we need even more letters than ever!

Have a chat to your child’s teacher, kaiako, learning support person or head to www.taupo.govt.nz/ironman for more info.

We have cars with tow bars and bike racks

A couple of weeks ago we attended a gathering of trail managers and operators from the "Central North Island" Great Rides group. We came away from the gathering with a bucket list of amazing rides so its going to be a busy 12 months ticking them all off! 😍🚲☀

Did you know there are 23 Ngā Haerenga Great Rides of New Zealand? 8 of these are in the Central North Island!

The Central North Island network showcases some of New Zealand's best riding - there is something for everyone. The grading varies through the trails is from 1-4 (with the Timber Trail being a 2-3) and the distance and duration varies from a few hours to a few days. Some of the trails can be cycled in short sections; others are point to point.

We were fortunate to ride the Huka to Aratiatia Dam ride with the support of the team from . The ride has some stunning scenery, river views and dam crossing; and is so accessible from the centre of Taupo.
