If Ruapehu erupts, what are the potential volcanic hazards it would generate, and how far might they travel?

It shows the possible impacts of an eruption, how to reduce the risk of being exposed to volcanic hazards, and what to do if you’re on the mountain when it erupts.

The primary impacts expected from an eruption at Ruapehu are fast moving clouds of steam and hot ash and flying hot rocks across the Summit Plateau and parts of the 2 km Exclusion Zone. Lahars (volcanic mudflows like a flash flood) are likely to occur in key catchments draining off the mountain.

Large areas of Tongariro National Park would be unaffected by eruptions at Ruapehu. All DOC tracks and huts in the Park remain open during VAL 2 due to their distance from the active crater.

To reduce the risk of being exposed to volcanic hazards while visiting Ruapehu:

✅Minimise time in valleys and rivers that are known lahar paths
✅Cross potential lahar paths quickly
✅Minimise time in the 3 km Summit Hazard Zone
✅Do not enter the 2 km Exclusion Zone.
