Your outer layer is your shield against Fiordland's unpredictable weather. It needs to be waterproof, windproof, and breathable to keep you dry and protected from the elements. A good quality rain jacket is essential—look for something durable but lightweight, so you can easily pack it away when the sun comes out. With the right outer layer, you'll be ready for whatever Mother Nature throws your way!

Your midlayer is the key to trapping warmth when hiking in Fiordland’s ever-changing weather. Think of it as your insulation—keeping the cold out and the heat in. Fleece or down are great options, offering a balance of warmth and breathability. Choose something lightweight but effective, so you can easily take it on or off and pop it in your pack when it isn't required.

Start with the Basics: Your Base Layer 🧦❄️

When it comes to hiking in Fiordland, your base layer is the foundation of staying warm and dry. Choose a material that’s breathable, can wick moisture away from your skin, and keeps you warm even when wet. Merino wool is a top choice—no surprise in New Zealand, where we’ve got plenty of it! There are also some great synthetic options if you prefer.

When you're out exploring Fiordland's breathtaking trails, your gear matters. Cotton might be comfy at home, but on the trail, it holds moisture, chills you quickly, and takes forever to dry. For your safety and comfort, stick to moisture-wicking, quick-drying fabrics. Your adventure will be so much better for it!
