Walking along the Maitai Valley Road yesterday, a Miro-like tree with red berries caught my eyes. Look closely, the berries are different from normal Podocarp. Found out is a Yew tree, apart from the red aril, all other parts of the tree are poisonous, including leaves, bark and seeds.( According to 'A field guide to the native edible plants of NZ' by Andrew Crowe ) The red aril is juicy, but you need to be very careful to try it out.
