Derby Tasmania!

A really mellow fun town which is all about mountain biking! Originally the site of a tin mine, there is history everywhere!

Now a huge mountain biking mecca it’s got long adventure rides from 15km to 42kms - Blue Tier, Atlas and Bay of Fires and a public mountain bike park with a range of trails!

Phil’s favourite trail was Cuddles with awesome slabs.

Katie’s favourite was the Bay of Fires Trail (even more fun on an e-bike) and Flickity Sticks at Blackstump.

Well worth a visit!

We stopped in George Town for one night as we heard they had two cool bike parks.

What a cool town at the mouth of the River Tamar (45 mins north of Launceston). One of the oldest towns in Australia, this place has amazing nautical history and has a really nice vibe!

We went penguin hunting around Low Head and saw wallaby’s, pandemelons, rabbits and penguin p**p, but no penguins!

Georgetown MTB trails (easy green & blues) and Tippogoree Hills MTB trails ( lots of blues and blacks), both just 10 minutes out of George Town are definitely worth a mornings riding! Fun flow trails with rocky features:)

Plan it right and there are shuttles in the weekend at Tippogoree, which beats the 350m climb to the summit :)

We have just had a siiick 3 days at Maydena MTB park!

At Maydena they have seriously created a mini Whistler style Mtb park!

This place has some serious lines, tech, flow, big jumps, trick trails, and all shuttle accessed with three shuttle options!

You can buggy to the first tier of trails, van shuttle to the midline or all the way to the top (10km)!

This gives you a 40 minute downhill.

With shuttles we knocked out 6 runs, 91km on day one, 5 runs, 67km on day two and 3 runs, 30km on day three (just a half day)!

The town of Maydena has a really nice vibe too, platypus in the river, a cave walk and beautiful Australian bush!

A lovely place to spend some time!

Mad about Travel are exploring the mountain bike parks of Tasmania 🙂

First stop - North South trail on Mt Wellington, Hobart. Nice warm up rocky flow trail with some really interesting skinnies and features which finishes at Glenorchy Bike Park which has some awesome jump lines.

Great if you have someone to drop you off at the top, if you don’t, best option is start from Glenorchy Bike Park, bike up the trail and then ride down 🙂

Next stop Maydena Bike Park

At Mad about Travel we are incredibly sad to hear of Al Raines passing at the age of 83.
A true legend of the ski world, he was Nancy Greenes husband, coach and father of their 2 boys.
He was absolutely key in the development of Sun Peaks as a world class ski resort and a town of its own right.

He once lent me a set of skiis, showed me around Sun Peaks, and then we watched hockey together over a beer.
A true gentleman.
May you find your everlasting powder Al!
You will me missed!
