It was truly a privilege to interview Brian Magew of River Valley Lodge for our most recent episode of the GOOD Awaits Podcast. Have you listened to it yet?

Brian's story is a beautiful example of the way that regenerative practice is first and foremost a mindset shift, and how transformative that mindset shift can be for our businesses, our communities and ourselves.

We loved talking with Brian, and the conversation made us so excited to be bringing travellers to visit River Valley Lodge during our GOOD Awaits Aotearoa trip next year! If you feel called to join us after listening to this be sure to check it out!

This season on GOOD Awaits, we're exploring tourism's purpose in a VUCA world - a world that is volatile, uncertain complex and ambiguous.

In this episode with Susanne Becken, we tackle some of the most important and challenging aspects of this conversation for tourism - exploring low-carbon travel, predatory delay, unsustainable bounce back, fast-growth models, and the need for a clear cohesive national strategy, ongoing regional support, and innovative business models.

Available to listen now on our website or via your podcast app.

Talking tourism in a VUCA world requires us to have challenging conversations, and this conversation with Susanne Becken was certainly that. If we’re to create a different future together, that means talking about low-carbon travel, predatory delay, unsustainable bounce back and fast-growth models...

"We can’t have a different future if we can’t imagine it first”

Whether we’re conscious of it or not, how we live, work, play - and travel - is all informed by the stories we tell ourselves, by the narratives we continue to uphold. We are all storytellers, and the stories we tell and how we tell them matter.

Join us in this two part episode on storytelling in a VUCA world. Our guest for part one is Alina Siegfried who guides us in exploring a new story for humanity, and new myths and narratives for a different future that we can all create together.

In part two, we’re joined by JoAnna Haugen, master storyteller for tourism, who shares how to craft honest, intentional, complicated, and complex stories that help shift our mindset as we adapt to our changing world.

GOOD Awaits - Season 2 Introduction available now!

This season, we're focussing our conversations around a guiding question: what is tourism's purpose in a VUCA - volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous - world?

This introductory episode features Debbie and Josie reflecting on Season 1, setting intentions for the new season, and beginning to unpack this challenging and critical question.

It's great to be back. We're looking forward to taking these conversations about tourism's future further in 2022, and welcome you to join us on the journey.

Motivated by our conversations on the GOOD Awaits podcast with pioneers of regenerative tourism practice in Aotearoa New Zealand we're thrilled to bring you a new GOOD Travel trip:

GOOD Awaits - A Regenerative Tourism Experience

We’re fiercely aware of the volatile and uncertain world we are living in, and believe that tourism has a role to play in the essential work of reconnecting with our places, nature and each other. This is a trip for travellers who want to explore new ways of connecting to place, to visit local hosts who are regenerating their communities and ecosystems, and to redefine travel's purpose - what if we could travel in a way that contributes to the regeneration of those who host us, the natural ecosystems that we're a part of, and ourselves?

We'd love to have you join us for this experience .

GOOD Awaits is not your average travel experience. It’s a new kind of trip that fosters ‘GOOD’, hope, resilience, and inspiration. This multi-day experience in Aotearoa New Zealand is a unique example of tourism serving regenerative practice. Motivated by our conversations on the GOOD Awaits p...

"Tourism, along with every other sector, must take responsibility for the impact it has on humankind’s ability to continue to survive and thrive on this planet... A new paradigm is needed, and a regenerative tourism model based in indigenous wisdom and living systems theory is the greatest hope tourism has for navigating the uncertain future and contributing to thriving communities.”

It was a privilege to be asked to contribute to the Journal of Tourism Future’s special edition on the Re-imagination of New Zealand Tourism.

This viewpoint piece is a summary of our year of research in and exploration of a regenerative paradigm for NZ tourism, through the GOOD Awaits podcast and with the guidance of many generous mentors. We're looking forward to continuing this learning journey in 2022.

We're so grateful to UNESCO NZ for providing the seed funding for Season 2 of the podcast.

UNESCO is the New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO, connecting Aotearoa New Zealand to the world by the fostering and sharing of ideas and growing the knowledge and capabilities needed to ensure a better future for all.

We love what UNESCO stands for and feel privileged to have received this funding and recognition from them to continue our work. We know that storytelling is vital for our transition to a regenerative future and so we're grateful to be supported to continue harvesting the stories of Aotearoa's regenerative tourism journey.

In 2021, Season 1 of GOOD Awaits took us on a journey to explore what a regenerative future could look like for the visitor sector in Aotearoa New Zealand.

We spoke to thought leaders advancing understanding of regenerative thinking in Aotearoa and globally, tourism operators working in harmony with their places to contribute to thriving communities, and we harvested our findings to share with you.

We're so grateful to our season 1 guests for putting their trust in us for our first GOOD Awaits podcast interviews. If you haven't already, be sure to listen to Season 1 to hear their stories and hopes for Aotearoa's tourism sector.

"One of the most powerful elements of the GOOD Awaits podcast is the commitment to the process of dialogue, investigation, inclusivity of different voices, and constant reflection. This process is important because it is true to the idea of regenerative thinking itself. Major and Clarke embraced a commitment to living systems thinking, and to the concepts of openness, listening for what wants to emerge, adaptation and iteration."

Season 2 of GOOD Awaits - coming soon!

We're proud to announce that with support and recognition from UNESCO who have provided us with seed funding, Season 2 of GOOD Awaits is on the way!

In Season 1, we explored what a regenerative future could look like for Aotearoa's tourism sector, spoke to amazing operators and thought leaders, and learnt so much about ourselves, our work and our sector.

In 2022, we're ready to take this conversation further - to ask challenging questions about tourism’s purpose, impact, and role in the future thrivability of our communities and natural ecosystems. We have some incredible guests lined up for you - operators pushing the boundaries of what is possible in tourism, communities welcoming visitors in new (and ancient) ways, and people challenging the very purpose of the visitor sector. We'll bring you storytellers, hosts, students, farmers, researchers - all paving the way for a new kind of tourism in a new kind of world.

We’re on a mission to share the stories of a radically new way forward for tourism - we hope that you'll join us.

Thanks so much to Joanna Haugen and Sustainable Brands for our inclusion in this important and informative article on the Back to Life programme. Participating in this programme developed and run by Anna Po***ck and Michelle Holliday was a transformative journey for both Josie and I.

It was this experience that inspired us to continue these critical conversations by launching the GOOD Awaits podcast in hopes of supporting a regenerative model of tourism for New Zealand.

Taking advantage of the forced pandemic pause and building off the momentum of a less extractive tourism model already taking shape in the country’s Bay of Plenty, the online program provided a foundation for shaping thriving host communities rooted in local context and culture.

Episode 10 is out today and this one feels like a milestone. This is our last interview for Season 1 of the GOOD Awaits podcast, so don't miss it!

We spoke with the wonderful Lee-Anne Jago, owner of Waka Abel Tasman. Lee-Anne and her husband Todd offer waka experiences in the Abel Tasman within a cultural framework of Maori tikanga and world view. They place their community at the heart of everything they do in their business and are passionate about uplifting rangatahi (young people) and supporting their community to thrive.

Our conversation with Lee-Anne is in many ways a summary of the regenerative tourism principles we’ve discussed in previous episodes; demonstrating how tourism can help communities thrive, create deep and meaningful connections, place purpose and passion at the heart of business, and be more resilient and adaptive in this VUCA world.

We hope you find value in this last interview of the season, please do get in touch if you have any thoughts or questions to share with us!

In this new VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) world we are living in, we have to come to terms with change as a constant.

Delighted to be included in the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)'s "Tourism for the Sustainable Development Goals" collection of projects and initiatives.

There are countless overlaps in intention and practice between regenerative tourism and sustainable development, and tourism has the ability and responsibility to make significant contributions to the SDGs. We are proud to play a small part in that contribution by sharing the stories of regenerative tourism in Aotearoa.

An initiative is a project or new idea that promotes tourism´s role in the advancement of the SDGs. This encompasses a wide variety of projects. Users are requested to include as much information as possible about the initiative. As well as include information if and on how people can participate o...

Episode 9! Wow!

And this one was fantastic. We spoke with Mandy Bell, co-owner of Criffel Station and Chairperson and Programme Director of WAI Wanaka.

Our conversation with Mandy went well beyond tourism, discussing how we can work across sectors to create systems level change. Mandy is a big picture thinker with ambitious goals for Aotearoa, but offers practical, actionable examples and ideas in this conversation. We found it so inspiring and it opened our eyes to the enormous potential of regenerative thinking and practice in tourism and beyond.

We hope you find this episode enlivening and that it sparks conversations for you and your communities. This week, we are actively inviting you to get in touch with us if you want to join us in becoming more connected with others interested in regenerative tourism and exploring our collective power to create change.

Flick us a message here or send us an email. We look forward to hearing from you.

This week we shared our conversation with Porina McLeod, owner and operator of Mauao Adventures and a member of Māori tourism operators' collective - Te Whānau Tāpoi Māori ō Tauranga Moana.

Now is a time when we need less competition and more collaboration. As we explore the importance of our interconnectedness to regenerative practice, we can see that by nurturing and supporting each other we can all thrive together.
