Off the beaten track, the Ahuriri Conservation Park (about 20km south of Omarama) borders the Waitaki Geopark. The old glacial valley has terraced rivers, fishing, hiking, cycling & 4WD tracks. These pics are from the track below Ben Avon peak. A great spot if you want to avoid the busier tracks in the Mackenzie region at peak times. 🌄🦌

Summer has arrived! 🌤
We're so glad to welcome so many people to stay at Manuka Retreat - Twizel over the summer holidays! So much to do this time of year, especially if you love the water and walks. The Ho**er Valley track is spectacular at any time of the year, and is one of the 'must do' walks in NZ. ☀️🗻

Lupin time! November & December are the best months to see the lupin bloom. These pretty pests can be found around all the lakes, fields & lining the hydro canals in the Mackenzie region making a lovely contrast against the glacial blue lakes. 😍

This is the time of year to see the spectacular Mt Cook giant buttercup (previously thought to be a lily), a NZ native and the largest buttercup in the world. There are fields of them on display on the second half of the Ho**er Valley track at Mt Cook National Park. A spectacular sight. Treat yourself to a pre-xmas weekend away from the end-of-year business and enjoy the sights of the Mackenzie region. 🗻

Ben Ohau Track
For those who like a climb - the views from the top of Ben Ohau summit are some of the best around. A 360 panorama of the Mackenzie Basin including a birds eye view of the Pukaki section of the Waitaki canals. A 20 minute drive from Manuka Retreat along the eastern side of Lake Ohau, the well formed track (and a bit of shingle) climbs steadily to 1500m and the view is definitely worth the effort. 🤩🗻

Benmore Peninsula Walk.
The run of stunning weather continues 😎. If you're heading down for the long weekend or school holidays & want to get away from the crowded walkways this one can't be beaten. High above Lake Benmore on clear days like today you can see Mt Cooks' peaks in the distance. Total solitude. A nice little message found on a rock at the top too. 💜
A 40 min drive from Manuka Retreat & a 30 min climb gets you there. Take water, lunch & a camera! 📷🌤

Milky Way setting.
If photography is your thing, the Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve is the perfect place for astrophotography. The milky way is getting low in the sky earlier at night which is a good time for panoramas to the west and still getting to bed at a reasonable hour! 🛌🏾 This shot was taken a 10 min drive from Manuka Retreat at Lake Ohau. If you're lucky you'll catch a bonus aurora! 🌌🌠

Golden hour at Tasman River. 🌅
Tucked far up the eastern side of Lake Pukaki these views across the Tasman River are worth the trip. This is also part of the Alps to Ocean bike trail & easy walking track too. Some stunning reflections of the Ben Ohau range as you drive around the lake. A lovely day trip from Manuka Retreat.

🗻 Tasman Glacier.
At 23km long and more than 2 million years old, the Tasman Glacier is one of NZ's best kept secrets. Surrounded by some of NZ's tallest peaks, Mt Tasman, the Tasman glacier and its terminal glacial lake sit quietly under stars and galaxies that are billions of years old. It's hard not to be impressed by the sense of scale.
A 40min drive from Manuka Retreat and 20 min walk will get you to the viewing point or local heli and skiplane flights, ice hiking and kayacking trips will get you up close and personal with this natural wonder. Put this one on your list. A day (or night) to remember! 🗻

The days are getting longer and it's warming up here in the Mackenzie. A perfect time to explore sections of the Alps to Ocean cycleway. The Omarama to Sailors cutting section follows along Lake Benmore and the views are stunning. These photos were taken right from the bike trail this weekend. Pack a lunch, bring your camera and enjoy the outdoors then head back to Manuka Retreat and relax on the deck in the late afternoon sun. ⛅️🚵♀️🍷
