PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT: We’ve been notified of 3 new measles cases in Auckland. The total for this year is 15.

If you've visited any of these locations, keep a look out for the following symptoms: fever, cough, runny nose and sore red eyes. Three to five days later, a rash appears on the face before moving down the body.

If you think you or your child may have measles, seek medical advice – but call your doctor or healthcare centre before turning up so you can be isolated on arrival. Free health advice is available by visiting https://www.arphs.health.nz/public-health-topics/disease-and-illness/measles/ or by calling Healthline – 0800 611 116.

The number of packages intercepted at the New Zealand border containing unlawful medicines continues to increase, and the most common imported medicines intercepted in 2018 were to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) (source: medsafe.govt.nzpublications/media/2018/OperationPangea.asp).

But did you know that many pharmacists have been able to provide consultations and medicine to treat ED since 2014? If you are concerned about your health, speak with your pharmacist first. Many pharmacies throughout New Zealand provide services beyond medicine dispensing and can be seen without the need to book any appointment.

By obtaining medicine from your pharmacist, you can be sure that it has passed quality inspection and is approved by Medsafe.

When you get your prescription filled at a community pharmacy you will usually be charged a $5 co-payment for each item on your prescription. Have you ever wondered where that $5 goes?

The simple answer is that it goes to the Government. The co-payment is the contribution you make to the cost of your medicine and is collected by community pharmacy on behalf of the Government.

If you are unable to pay your prescription charge, or if a pharmacy chooses to reduce or waive the fee, the Government still takes the $5 from the pharmacy, leaving the pharmacy $5 short.

There may be extra charges on some medicines or medicine brands that are not fully subsidised.

Tip 3 to improve your use of medicines: Know the active ingredient.

Active ingredients are what make your medicines work. If you are offered an alternative or generic brand of prescription medicine, it will work the same way as your usual medicine because of the active ingredient it contains.

It is also a good idea to know the active ingredient, to check that any over the counter products you take will not interact poorly with your prescription medicine. When in doubt, ask your community pharmacist for advice.

Urinary tract infection

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a reasonably harmless, though painful, condition that many people are too embarrassed to get help for. In some cases ignoring the pain and discomfort can lead to serious complications so it’s important to get it checked out.

The urinary tract consists of the kidneys, the ureter (which connect the kidneys to the bladder), the bladder and the urethra. A UTI is caused when this area becomes over populated with bacteria.

If you or a family member has a urinary tract infection, you'll need to see a health care professional for antibiotics.

Pharmacists are accredited to provide a short course of antibiotics to women with uncomplicated UTIs aged between 16 to 65 years without a prescription. An accredited pharmacist is trained to identify who they can treat and who needs to be referred to another health professional.

Pop in and see your local community pharmacist for further information.
