Congratulations Pūteketeke! 👑 A worthy winner 🏆 👏 👏 👏

Congratulations to Pūteketeke/Australasian crested grebe/kāmana for being crowned Forest & Bird's Bird of the Century! 👑

It's no surprise that this native, Threatened-Nationally Vulnerable, diving water bird took out the crown with a record number of votes, with all the international media attention it got 🗳️

If you don't know much about pūteketeke, here's a little bit about them.

They are found in alpine and sub-alpine lakes in the South Island of New Zealand, and Australia.

At least 100 South Island lakes once had grebes but there have been ongoing declines in Marlborough, the West Coast and in Fiordland. Only Canterbury and Otago remain as strongholds.

There are fewer than 1,000 birds in Aotearoa - Their numbers have declined mainly due to introduced predators; and loss of habitat through wetland drainage.

Animals like stoats, ferrets, and cats can prey on eggs and fledglings, while introduced fish and birds compete for food and breeding space.

You can help this taonga species by getting behind things like backyard trapping, supporting your local trapping groups and being mindful and responsible when visiting areas where pūteketeke live.

Dead Horse Pinch. 💀 🐎 🤏

This was a steep hard pull for horse-drawn wagons on the Pigroot Road to the Central Otago goldfields 🐖 👑

Horses finding the going too tough often died and were buried over the bank 😢 🪦

Heavily laden wagons were drawn by eight or 10-horse teams. It was not uncommon for a wagon to become bogged down in some of the awful quagmires to be met along this route, or stuck on a steep hillside that proved too much for a tired team 😴 😴 😴

Wagons usually travelled in pairs for mutual safety, "double banking" over difficult sections when necessary ⛑️

The Dead Horse Pinch was the last major obstacle short of a night's rest at the halfway house, two miles west of here 🧭

In 1862 when the Dunstan gold rush commenced, the Pigroot became a major route to the goldfields 🏦 ⛰️

Lightweight, four-horse "express" coaches provided a two day long mail, passenger and gold es**rt service between Dunedin and the Dunstan (Clyde) 🐎 🐎 🐎 🐎

The coach was the recognised "king of the road" and the wagoners would hurriedly draw to the side to let it pass 🤴

The heavy, lumbering wagons carried up to four tons of goods, receiving anything from £8 a ton for the journey between Dunedin and the Dunstan, compared to £100 a ton paid at the height of the Dunstan rush 💰 💰 💰

In 1892 the Central Otago Railway penetrated inland as far as Middlemarch, bringing to an end the era of coach and wagon services on the Pigroot 🚂 🚂

New Zealand with Colin Mairs — Tonight on Monday Night Travel!

I always enjoy a dose of kilted Scotsman spirit with my friend and fellow tour guide Colin Mairs — and tonight (Monday, May 16), he’s joining MNT moderator Julianne Wurden for a virtual trek around his new home base of New Zealand.

Known to the Māori people as "The Land of the Long White Cloud" and to Lord of the Rings fans as Middle Earth, New Zealand is a country rich with indigenous culture, gorgeous fjords, lush rainforests, and serene beaches. Colin’s all ready to go with a Kiwi feast of pavlova, Anzac biscuits, and New Zealand wine — and he’s looking forward to seeing you soon! Register now at www.ricksteves.com/mnt.

This popped up on my Facebook memories...

7 years ago - trekking to Mount Everest Base Camp ⛺️ 🏔 (5,364 metres / 17,598 ft)

The altitude was probably the toughest physical and mental challenge I’ve ever experienced.

Trekking back down to lower altitude was exhilarating though!

At one point on one of the acclimatisation days where you “trek high and sleep slow”, meaning go a bit higher during the day but then come down again to sleep to help acclimatise to the higher altitude, I really started to feel that my body was not made to be at those altitudes (i.e. over 3,000metres / 9,800feet) and the line from Bob Dylan’s song “The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest", which says:
“Well, the moral of the story,
The moral of this song,
Is simply that one should never be,
Where one does not belong”
began to repeat over and over in my head 🤯

I continued though and I’m glad I did.

Every day on the trek I ate the same meal for lunch and dinner. Garlic soup (apparently the local natural remedy for altitude), followed by dal bhat (steamed rice and thick lentil soup, usually accompanied by steamed or sauteed vegetables, vegetable curry, popadoms, pickle, and curd 🍛 🥘

Thinking about the food now is giving me cravings for it 😋

I would love to go back to Nepal again some day but probably not that high up, or if I did I would do it at a slower pace 🚶🏼‍♂️

Last week I completed Level 2 of my Te Reo Māori journey. I’ve been attending class once a week (1.5 hours per week) for 16 weeks (levels 1 and 2). We had to do a Whaikōrero to our class - a formal speech to the gathering, with part of it being about my genealogy as far back as my grandparents and a bit more about where I am from and who I am.
