Anne in front of the Hunua Falls, Hunua Regional Park, Auckland. A very busy day being ANZAC day. Someone has had some fun constructing this little whare. As winter approaches the falls are even more spectacular.

Ngäi Tai association with the Whakakaiwhara Peninsula begins with the visit of the Tainui waka hourua canoe in the early 1300s. The Tainui moored in the shelter of the Peninsula from a storm while
it was travelling up the east coast of Aotearoa, having arrived from Hawaiiki. The crew went ashore and ate fruit from the forest on the
Peninsula. This is the origin of the name Whakakaiwhara, which means to eat (kai) the edible bracts (whara) of the kiekie vine.
It was an interesting discussion regarding the naming of Whakakaiwhara Pa knowing that it was a food gathering area and our affiliation to Tainui through whakapapa genealogy. We would really like to acknowledge mana whenua for the experience of walking to this amazing whenua. Ngaa mihi nui e te whanau.

Looking forward to getting to the top of the majestic Kitekite falls. The view down the vally is epic and a little scary if you happen to be standing on the edge. And a few eels are in these pools, but most people take a dip regardless of the eels.

Linda enjoying a coastal walk out to Whakakaiwhara Pa, Duders Regional Park. A very hot day with ups and downs through farmland but well worth reaching the pa site at the end. Ngaa mihi ki Ngai Tai, the iwi and hapu of this area.

This hakari hangi feast is going back over 2 1/2 years ago before COVID 19 reached our shores. It was a great experience to have hangi right in the CBD Auckland thanks to Rewi Spraggon the Hangi Master and co. Lets hope our CBD gets lots of visitors as we open our borders to the outside world.

The pōhutukawa is one of twelve Metrosideros species endemic to New Zealand. Renowned for its vibrant colour and its ability to survive even perched on rocky, precarious cliffs, it has found an important place in New Zealand culture for its strength and beauty, and is regarded as a chiefly tree (rākau rangatira) by Māori. This painting looks at the tenacious spirit that typifies pōhutukawa.

With summer arriving the Auckland fisheries is looking pretty good. You will normally get a feed of schnapper and kahawai. Schnapper is an excellent table fish, lightly cooked whereas kahawai is beautiful smoked. Looking forward to more fishing this summer.
