New Zealand Postcard Giveaway!!!

*** FREE postcard posted from New Zealand to anywhere in the world ***

Do you know someone who’s face would light up at receiving a postcard from New Zealand?

Perhaps someone who has been here before, a youngster who is just learning about the map of the world, or someone who dreams of coming one day... or just yourself!

In the spirit of tangible travel experiences (something that is often overlooked in our digital age) I’ll send a physical postcard - hand written, hand delivered by the postie, and with a squinty stamp - to anyone who wants one. 📩 🗺 🌏

The Kawarau Bridge Bungy near Queenstown is the world’s first commercial bungy jump. Started by New Zealander, A J Hackett, in the 1980s. It’s history and adrenaline all rolled into one!! 😆

This is the French Market in Parnell, Auckland!
🇫🇷 🇳🇿
Bustling with action every Saturday and Sunday morning. Live music, mostly food stalls, you can do your fruit and vegetable shopping for the week (almost all organic and spray-free), nice places for coffee, fresh juice, etc.
☕️ 🥤 🥖 🥐
The market is “French-style” because you get croissants, fresh bread and other frenchie things... There are lots of other international stalls too. It’s a great place to hang out on a Saturday or Sunday morning.
😎
The inside part of the market is open through the week, Monday-Friday, but the outdoor stalls are only Saturday and Sunday mornings.

It’s nearly Matariki! 🌌

Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars that rises in mid-winter and, for many Māori, heralds the start of a New Year!

The cluster is also known as the Pleiades.

When is Matariki?
Different tribes celebrate Matariki at different times.
For 2018, June 7th is listed as the day that Matariki sets and July 6 - 9 as the rising, which is when Matariki should be visible just above the horizon before the sun comes up.

😢 Today I visited “The Lonely Graves”.

The first grave at Horseshoe Bend, of a then unknown miner, was provided with a headboard by local man William Rigney, who inscribed the words,
“Somebody’s darling lies buried here.”

A new headstone, reproducing the words, was put in place in 1903.

Rigney died in 1912 and was buried next to the earlier grave, his headstone marked with the words
“Here lies the body of William Rigney, The man who buried “Somebody’s Darling”’.

(click the comments to see the two graves side by side).

One year ago I held this chunk of ice from the Franz Josef Glacier in my hand. It had been washed down river during a storm! The glacier is the white patch above the ice in the picture. I’m standing in the valley the glacier has left behind in its retreat. Although Franz Josef Glacier is currently advancing (!! since the end of 2016, it has crept forward by about 80m, making it one of the few glaciers in the world that is growing, not shrinking!!), scientists say that it’s not likely this will continue for long. An 80m advance after a 1400m retreat is one step forward after 18 steps backwards. It is predicted that within 100 years New Zealand’s glaciers will shrink into extinction. This raises all kinds of questions about sustainable tourism and responsible practises. The irony is that people hear it’s their last chance to see the glaciers before they are gone and this makes them all the more popular an attraction, and perhaps also contributes to their decline. What is the right way to go about this? I have more questions than answers. Sustainability in tourism (as in anything) is the key to continuation. Finding the correct balance between ecology, economics, politics and culture. A fine balancing act!
