We play our part in educating those who are with us and around us, doing what we can to be Kaitiaki (Guardians) of this amazing place.

Tongariro is the ancestral mountain to the iwi (people and tribe) Ngāti Tūwharetoa.

To respect the sanctity of the mountains the kaitiaki hapū (sub-tribe and guardians of the mountains) Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro, ask that summits are not climbed and streams and alpine lakes are not touched.

There's no doubt that winter is here on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. A well equipped group is heading up today, ready for whatever snow and ice has been left by the recent weather system.

A short and sweet article about the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in the iconic Wlderness Magazine. Yes, we are open for business, it's time for Kiwis to get some really fresh air!

We are taking ‘jumping for joy’ quite literally as we move within reach of Alert Level 2.

On May 11 the Government will announce when we drop to Alert Level 2 of Lockdown and we will be up and running safely soon after.

Kiwis, bring your bubble and explore your own backyard on a trip that is put on just for you.

Fresh air, wide open spaces and all things good about Aotearoa, this is good for the soul.

Forget any images you have about overcrowding,.. that was an eternity ago!

Call or message us about the tweaks that we can make to our fantastic trips that will make them safe and Bubble-friendly.

We hope to see you soon!

01/05/2020

As Aotearoa progresses out through the Levels of Lockdown we will follow the official advice and operate as soon as we are able to safely.

Soon, Kiwis will have a chance to explore their own backyard. Forget the bad Press about crowds, we knew how to avoid that even before this sudden re-set! Our beautiful country is waiting for us to explore it, so seize the opportunity to bring your nearest and dearest bubbles to the mountains and experience them with a team who can unlock the secrets that this spectacular holds. We will tweak our usual products as things evolve over time, so get in touch to start planning an quality guided walking experience.

Our search and rescue volunteers freely contribute their time but we need to train and equip them. The goodwill and generosity of the public can help us fund accredited training programmes, ongoing operational expenses and equipment purchases.

Some of the amazing work done by the dedicated Staff of DoC

We are often asked, "We would like to go up to the very top of the mountain, will you guide us up there?", here is why we remain on routes that avoid the highest points. We still see amazing sights and have a great time. Respect is not difficult.

We totally support this stance and frequently educate other folk around us that this is not the right place for drones. Having seen our native Karearea (falcon) be upset by drones and risk injury by attacking them, it is just one more reason why drones should be left at home when heading into NZ National Parks.

Here is some stunning footage and cautious explanation about the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, aimed at people who are going it alone.

Tongariro Guided Walks takes a lot of the guess work out of the situation by interpreting the weather before and during the trip, as well as literally giving you a hand in some of the tricky bits that are shown in the video. We provide the knowledge, the gear, the transport and the Staff to make your time on the Crossing a quality guided walking experience. We apply years of knowledge and experience on Tongariro to make an honest call on ensuring you have a great day. We don't go on every day that we have a booking, but we certainly do go often.

If this looks like something that you would enjoy, drop us an email! If this looks a bit much for you, check out our website www.tongariroguidedwalks.nz for the numerous other options that are available in Tongariro National Park, each one is amazing in it's own way.

Scientists continue to learn about our fantastic volcanoes. We really appreciate them sharing their findings and feel a sense of security that they are constantly monitoring the situation.

Our scientists have uncovered new info about how underground water flows are linked below Tongariro, and found that while features like Ketetahi hot springs, Te Maari Crater, Red Crater and Emerald Lakes are part of the same hydrothermal system, they are not directly connected at depth and can behave independently. 🌋

The search subject over-reaches with their assessment of their skills and ability in this environment, has sub-standard footwear for the conditions, carries no specialist snow or ice equipment, leaves no really clear intentions with friends. Sadly this is not an unusual scenario. Please don't let you or your friends become the subject of a newspaper article like this.

Understand what you need to adventure safely:
Choose the right place to adventure for your skill and ability.
Tell someone exactly where you plan to go, including your plan B.
Turn back if things are getting beyond what you can manage.
Have the right clothing and gear for the conditions, having learnt how to use them properly.
Take the right navigation and emergency communications equipment for the area.
Make it home safe to adventure for another day.

A mountain rescue on the weekend involved 40 people, two helicopters and came at a cost of about $11,000.
Rescuers are now pleading with people to stop taking risks on the very unpredictable Central Plateau mountains.

Taupo Search and Rescue Coordinator Senior Constable Barry Shepherd said the situation could have been avoided.
"People need to be equipped and dressed for the activity, it's no different than going scuba diving, or driving a race car.
