Ian and his wife have been having an wonderful time in Portugal.

Even in its peak tourism season, Porto is lovely despite its busyness. They've been enjoying sampling plenty of Vinho Verde, Pastel de nate, Octopus, sardines and of course, Port!

These are a few photos from their time exploring Porto and a day trip along the Douro River; visiting vineyards, learning about Douro viticulture and indulging in some more sampling 😉

Considering Portugal as part of your 2025 travel itinerary? Call 03-364-3400 or email [email protected] and lets start planning.

During Juliet's recent visit to Japan, she travelled on the famous bullet trains and experienced both Tourist Class and Gran Class. Here's what she had to say about the different products...

"On the bullet train, we travelled in both tourist class (excellent legroom and reclining seat) and gran class. Gran class is very similar to premium economy on a flight. The coaches have significantly fewer seats with a 1-2 configuration. The seats have leg rests and recline much further. The coaches are staffed and offer a complimentary boxed meal and unlimited drinks (including alcoholic), depending on the length of your journey. I would highly recommend it!"

That moment when your boarding pass dings at the gate and instead of an expected seat change, you are upgraded to first class!! Travelling with Cathay Pacific from Tokyo to Hong Kong on their Boeing 777-300 in first class was a noticeable step up from business class, which I’d flown a week earlier. With just 6 seats and total privacy in each, the seat is much wider and more comfortable and when extended the lie-flat bed would cater to most of above average height. The space is also configured to allow a travel companion to dine with you.

One of Juliet's absolute favourite experiences in Tokyo was a visit to teamLab Borderless Digital Art Museum.

teamLab Borderless is a group of digital artworks that form one continuous, constantly changing, borderless world. The artworks move out of the rooms freely, form connections and relationships with people, communicate with other works, influence and sometimes intermingle with each other.

‼️HOT TIPS:
1. We highly recommend pre-purchasing tickets before you depart New Zealand (your Discover Travel consultant can help with this). Tickets are only available at the door if not already sold out and they can sell out well in advance.

2. Make sure you allow time to really immerse yourself in the experience! Once you have your entry ticket for a specific day, there is no limit on how long you can stay in the museum after admission. Juliet spent an hour and a half exploring the exhibit and said she could have spent more hours, if she had the time.

Janine has arrived in Borneo!! For 11 day's she will be immersing herself in Borneo's Eastern Sabah region as part of a small group tour with G Adventures.

From Kota Kinabalu, they travel to Tambatuon village and meet the local community. They visited local farms to learn about the farming practices and landscape, tried on traditional dress, gathered fresh ingredients, and learned how to cook some local dishes with their homestay hosts.

Can you spot Mount Kinabalu (4,094m) in the background? Janine will be climbing that mountain in a few days...wish her luck! :)

Discover Travel's Janine Hay is currently spending a few days exploring Malaysia's capital city of Kuala Lumpur before she heads to Borneo to join a small group tour with G Adventures.

Today she took in the sights of the city and also visited Batu Caves.

Famously known for its colourful stairs with 272 steps to be exact, and a beautiful Hindu temple, Batu Caves is a must-visit while in KL.

Located in Gombak, Selangor (about 13km north of the capital), the cave complex contains many Hindu temples, the most popular of which is a shrine dedicated to Hindu god Murugan. For over a century now, Hindus from all over have come together during festivals to celebrate and pray together. From its magnificently-built shrines and statues set against a captivating background of limestone hills, Batu Caves is definitely a destination not to be missed.

A few more photos just in from Juliet who is currently exploring beautiful Japan.
It's been a busy few days visiting the Kenrokuen Gardens and Sensoji Temple, having some fun at a Samurai Experience, travelling on Japan's famous "shinkansen" high speed bullet train, plus so much more!

Juliet is currently immersing herself in Japanese culture and we are getting very jealous back here in the office.

Images from her visit to Jingo-ji Buddist temple which stands on Mount Takao (a short drive northwest of Kyoto), a delicious lunch nearby, followed by a Japanese Hollywood Experience!

Juliet will be returning from Japan with some new cooking skills after learning how to make Ramen from scratch at the Ramen Factory in Kyoto! Yum!

While in Kyoto Juliet also visited Nijo Castle and it's stunning gardens, Kinkakuji; the Golden Pavilion and spent time in the Gion; Kyoto's most famous geisha district.

Watch this space for more updates from Juliet's travels.
