The gentle 1 km round-trip trail starts at the carpark and meanders through open farmland. Keep an eye out for the friendly sheep, and remember to respect the private property🐑. Cross the bridge, and you'll enter the bush, leading to two viewing platforms overlooking the falls and the valley below.

Who remembers the great Wind Wand replica competition of 1999? 🙋

The Wind Wand is a 48-metre kinetic sculpture, crafted from the visionary designs of Len Lye, and stands proudly along the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway. Installed in '99, it's been swaying in the breeze by day and glowing softly at night ever since.

The Wind Wand has become an iconic landmark along the Taranaki Coastal Arts Trail, capturing the interest of all who visit.

Tell us in the comments if you entered a Wind Wand in the competition to turn the light on at midnight.

📍 Pouākai Tarn
How do you get here?
1️⃣ The Pouākai Circuit is a two-three day hike overnighting in two Doc Huts; Holly’s Hut, and the Pouākai Hut. Starting at the North Taranaki Visitor Centre, the circuit takes you through the fragile Ahukawakawa Swamp, golden tussocks, and summer flowers, with a side trip to the Stony River’s Bells Falls.

2️⃣ The Pouākai Crossing is a one-day hike that takes in the highlights of the longer tramp. This walk starts at North Egmont and finishes at Mangorei Road, so transport between points will need to be arranged (shuttle services available). To complete the 18.4km track you will require a good level of fitness. December - April is the best time to go as conditions higher up can be icy and dangerous during winter months.

3️⃣ The Pouākai Hut walk can be done in 4-5 hours depending on your level of fitness, and how long you rest at the top. The hike begins at Mangorei Road, head up the boardwalk to the Pouākai Hut, from there it’s a short flat 15-minute walk to the famous Pouākai Tarn, returning the same way.

Save this post for your next mountain adventure and check out taranaki.co.nz/visit for ‘know before you go’ details and information on these hikes.
