Wow, it was the guy on the next table who had a birthday today.
The Falklands are about to open to tourism after the 'longest' lockdown. It could be scheduled for November this year (if I can get space and airline seats) or next year 2023. I know The Falklands will be in heavy demand as pretty much all accommodation throughout the islands was fully booked for the whole year prior to lockdown.

The Bull Elephant Seal and his Harem
Another Mirrabac Memory: Wow! A trip to the beach to watch, photograph or video', to live' the life of a wildlife photographer/videograher. That's a BIG part of what a Mirrabac is about.
For those who have travelled with us to the Falklands, I hope this 'vid' rekindles some wonderful memories for you. Best wishes to you all.
Feed Me! Feed Me!
Another Mirrabac Memory: A fantastic day at Volunteer Point with the colonies of King, Gentoo and Magellanic penguins. In this image we have a King penguin and chick hounding his mother for more food!
White rhino and calf
Another Mirrabac Memory in South Africa: We pull up on a game drive because, well there's something wonderful to see. A white rhino and her calf. Unfortunately the horns have been filled down no need to explain why as I'm sure you know the reason. However these fascinating creatures are always a joy to watch.
South American Grey Fox
Another Mirrabac Memory in Argentina: We were sitting having drinks when this fox turned up. He jumped onto a chez lounge and ripped off a tag from a cushion. He then went behind us to this grassed area to play with his new toy!
South American Green Tree Iguana
Another Mirrabac Memory in Ecuador: On the Mirrabac Galapagos Explorer we spend time at Iguana Park in Guayaquil, Ecuador, when returning from the Galapagos Islands. I cannot remember my question to the iguana but he seems to agree!
Gentoo Penguins on a Mission
Another Mirrabac Memory at the Falkland Islands: The gentoo penguins have left their nesting site and are heading out for a fishing trip. I set the camera up in a narrow gap that they liked to pass through. As soon as I hit the record button I had to hide as they would not advance with me anywhere near their pathway. It took a few video attempts but eventually I think this vid was a success and highlights just one of the many attractions to be experienced at the Falkland Islands. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I do. (FYI: Video is 55 sec in length).
Perito Moreno Glacier, Argentina.
Another Mirrabac Memory in Argentina at the Perito Moreno Glacier at the Los Glaciares National Park. Sorry folks we are not touring at present, I'm sure you all know why, but at least you can see some of the great sites we have (or could have) shared with you during the last 23 years. Stay safe, keep well, and best wishes for 2021 from the Mirrabac Team.
Another Great Morning at Sossusvlei, Namibia.
Another Mirrabac Memory: An early morning scene in the Tsauchab River bed at Sossusvlei, Namibia (2019). Always a joy to photograph or to capture on video.
Blue Morph Butterfly
The Blue Morph butterfly has superhydrophobic surface is when water is dropped, a spherical ball forms and rolls off the surface. Any dirt or dust that is on the surface will be removed along with the water drop forming. The wings of Morpho butterfly are interesting because of its self-cleaning property. The microstructure of the wing plays an important role in this unique feature. It is one of the few butterflies that will fly in the rain. See next post showing the caterpillar in stage 4 instar.
Another great find on our tour of Costa Rica.
Blue Morph caterpillar - stage 4 Instar
When a Blue Morph caterpillar is ready to pupate, it becomes zombie-like. It closes its mouth and no longer eats. Then during the nighttime, it climbs up the tree trunk to escape danger looking for a safe place to pupate. In the caterpillar cycle it gooes through 5 stages until it pupates. What you see here is stage 4. The sound in the background is that of a nearby waterfall.
