This is the final piece in my second complete series of sculpture, 𝘾𝙡𝙤𝙪𝙙𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙐𝙣𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜 : A very special commission via for and in celebration of the re-opening of the St James Theatre in Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

𝘾𝙡𝙤𝙪𝙙𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙐𝙣𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜, 2022, are sculptural forms beholden to the fluidity and temporality of the waters and the skies, the ephemeral resonance of a piece of music, the wisdom of a stone, the languid movement of a river, a bird’s flight. Forms in love with the intrinsic qualities of matter under various phases of transformation. Forms that want to meet the universe halfway, in the entanglement of culture and nature.

Introducing, 𝘾𝙡𝙤𝙪𝙙𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙐𝙣𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜, my second series of sculpture and a very special commission via for and in celebration of the re-opening of the St James Theatre.

This series of work seeks communion with the substance of that which cannot be known, those phases of transition and sensual experience that cannot be grasped through the structure of language and intellectual reasoning. Those moments that reside beyond any capacity of mental conception, and therefore exist without a definitive image or form.

These works are sculptural forms beholden to the fluidity and temporality of the waters and the skies, the ephemeral resonance of a piece of music, the wisdom of a stone, the languid movement of a river, a bird’s flight. Forms in love with the intrinsic qualities of matter under various phases of transformation. Forms that want to meet the universe halfway, in the entanglement of culture and nature.

The River Bangle came to be through a joyful collaboration with Marina Davis of OVNA OVICH]

Marina and I both liked the idea of the bangle having a fluid, amorphous form, and so I tried to treat each bangle as a kind of singular abstract sculpture, carving and sanding each piece by hand until I arrived at a form that felt satisfying and distinct.
