More Summer Fun from the Department of Conservation - Hauraki-Coromandel!

Head up on January 6th for a full day of activities, including the Dam Release.

Have you ever seen the Dam release? How much do you know about the Dams that were built up the Kauaeranga Valley? Do you know that the water level on the river had to be managed so that the Kauri logs could be safely brought down the valley without being smashed into splinters?

There's so much that's interesting to explore in Thames and it's surrounds.

All the details of this DoC event are here: https://explorethames.nz/event/kauri-event-dam-release/

The Kauri Model Damn was restored in a partnership between DoC and Rotary Club of Thames.

Live-music lovers! Mark your calendars now.

On January 12, one of NZ's hardest-working bands - dubbed 'national treasures' by Radio NZ and The Herald - will perform at the Kauaeranga Hall.

Yes, that's right - The Eastern, not seen here since 2018, is back to deliver one of their rolling, rambling, spirit-raising atmospheres.

If you don't live in Thames, it's the perfect excuse for an overnight, or weekend visit. Come see The Eastern, and then head up the Valley the next morning and take in a walk or too, or jump in Hoffman's Pool for a luscious swim.

Full event details are here: https://explorethames.nz/event/the-eastern-january-2023/

Guess which small town is the third most popular destination according to AirBnB search data from January 1 to September 30, 2023 for future travel during the full 2024 year?

Yep - Thames!

And why not?

After all, the sunsets are stunning, the walks are spectacular, the vibe is quirky, the shopping is eclectic, the history is fascinating, the camping is plentiful and the locals are friendly.

Plus Thames is the perfect base to explore the rest of the Coromandel - especially now SH25a has reopened.

If you live here, and you haven't explored Thames lately, get out and enjoy a coffee at one of our many cafes, or head down to Kuranui Bay Reserve or Thornton Bay to watch the sunset.

Don't forget to stop in at one of the many shops to pick up any last minute Christmas shopping.

And just take a moment to appreciate the beauty and wonder of this town.

All those people searching on AirBnB are keen to explore Thames - and there's definitely plenty to discover.

Welcome to Te Kauaeranga Thames, where you can explore interesting shops, history and adventures any time of year.

We have such a vast source of historical Thames typography in the archives, that it made designing a set of Thames fonts for our businesses to use a piece of cake.

But we couldn't choose just one style to design our Thames logo, so being the quirky, creative type, we chose them all!
