I have no idea if they were legally allowed to use Donald Duck, or if it's a National Party 'we thought it was pretty legal' thing.

We had some sad news over the weekend. Longtime supporter, Maria, who we celebrated having her 90th birthday in May, has passed away. Maria’s passion was music, but she was equally passionate about food waste. She took a real delight in her garden, and excitedly contacted us when she had fruit to share. We were very fortunate to have known her, she was a real treasure. If you have excess fruit, follow Maria’s example, and share with the community. If we can help, just get in touch. Rest in peace Maria, we will miss you.

This is an amazing opportunity for an enthusiastic person (or a couple for those that wish to job share) that would like to live on an island and contribute towards one of most ambitious restoration sites in New Zealand, Mana Island Scientific Reserve (217 hectares). Same applies in Aotearoa.

There’s always a lot of talk about “clover lawns” being an eco-friendly alternative to regular lawns. Here’s the problem with that.

White clover (Trifolium repens) and red clover (Trifolium pratense) are invasive to most of North America. An invasive species is one that’s both non-native and harmful to native ecosystems.

Replacing one invasive monoculture with another invasive monoculture is not progress. It’s important to encourage biodiversity by planting different species together.

If you’re doing it for the bees, there are many native plants in North America that bloom at the same time or earlier than these invasive clover species and provide much more support for native pollinators.

I don’t know who first started spreading the fallacy that these invasive Eurasian plant species are important for North American pollinators, but it’s just misinformation.

People also promote growing “clover lawns” because they need less water than turf grass.

Native plants are a better alternative because In general, they don’t need to be irrigated once they’re established in your soil. There are also tons of North American native plants that are drought tolerant.

So if you’re going to kill your lawn (which I encourage!) please replace it with plants that are beneficial for your region

I have a post with some US native ground cover suggestions and another post about how to find plants that are native to you. Both are l*nked in the comments.

Just before I start propagating in earnest for this new growing season, and everything gets crazy, I thought I'd do a little "this is me post!" for those who follow me, but don't know me.

Well, this is me - Minette Tonoli

I clearly *LOVE* plants! And gardening ;-) :) :D

Thank you for following along my journey as MeadowSweet Herbs & Flowers as I inspire soulful gardening - especially when it is for growing food and medicine plants, and sharing ideas on how to use all the produce in the kitchen and as gentle home remedies.

These are all the things I do:
* Run a small boutique nursery (online sales and in person) specializing in homegrown and spray-free herbs (plus some seasonal vegetables)
* Do talks and workshops (on site and away) on various gardening, and herb use topics.
* Write a lot about herbs and gardening.
*Grow a large biodiverse potager garden with fruit, vegetable, herbs, edible flowers, weeds, and beneficial companion support plants.
* Grow fruit trees in an organically cared for 'Backyard Orchard Culture' style. I'm also interplanting these with lots of herbs and flowers in an adapted food forest (guild) model.
* Grow over a hundred pretty dahlias... because... they are pretty! Oh, and edible (flowers and tubers).
* Save seeds! I am obsessed with saving seeds.
* Collect heritage tomatoes (265 varieties and counting...)
* Grow lots of chillies too (120 varieties and counting...)
* Make things with my herbs including yummy foodie things and teas, as well as medicinals such as tinctures and balms for my home apothecary.
* Run a small acre farmyard with milking goats, heritage chooks, Indian runner ducks, Japanese quail, and guinea pigs.
* Am a bit passionate about sourdough everything and fermenting everything.

I hug trees.

And take far too many pictures of bees on flowers.

Care: Light: Bright Indirect light. Water: Let the soil dry out slightly between waterings, without getting completely parched. This fern also absorbs water through its fronds, so misting the plant every day or two will also help to keep it hydrated.
