ALPS 2 OCEAN
Cycle the new Alps to Ocean cycleway from Mount Cook to Oamaru, part of the Nga Haerenga NZ cycle path. Follow a drop of water falling on the mighty Southern Alps as it follows the waterways of the Waitaki River to the sea. Explore the beautiful turquoise lakes and the canals and dams down through the valley. Easy grade one and two cycling on quiet roads and dedicated cycleways makes

for a great bicycle vacation, staying at beautiful B&B accommodation or your choice of hotels, motels and holiday parks. At Oamaru, take time to explore the beautiful historic Whitestone quarter with the many arts and craft stores, as well as the popular Blue Penguin colony. Start with the first three days riding down the shores of Lake Pukaiki to Twizel and across to Lake Ohau lodge and onto Omarama. Or chose your ride from short one day cycle options based around Twizel on the dedicated trail sand sealed roads. With quality cycle hire, shuttles to the start of your trail, luggage transfers and accommodation bookings available, this trail will make a great short break vacation experience in the heart of the southern alps. THE WEST COAST WILDERNESS TRAIL
True to its name, the West Coast Wilderness Cycle Trail showcases some of New Zealand’s most rugged coastlines, wild landscapes and dramatic alpine views, all on some of the smoothest trails in country. Starting from either Ross or Greymouth, you will cycle alongside picturesque lakes and historic water races, experience the charm of old gold mining and timber milling towns and explore some of the country’s most exceptional wetlands, where you might even see a native kōtuku (white heron)! Choose your starting point, upgrade to our Scenic Waterway experience, add an E-bike or remove bike hire altogether. Our flexibility means you can tailor your cycling package or service to suit you or your group. THE PAPAROA TRACK
The Paparoa Track is New Zealand’s newest Great Walk, and the first to be designed as a shared use track for both cyclists and walkers. The track crosses the Paparoa mountain ranges between the small ex-mining town of Blackball and the busy tourist village of Punakaiki on the South Island’s West Coast. The nearest towns to the Paparoa Track are Blackball, Punakaiki and Greymouth.

We are very excited to announce a new Partnership Program between Cycle Journeys, the Great Taste Trail Trust, Tasman District Council and landowners to enhance a section of the trail alongside the Wai-iti River and Quail Valley.

The project aims to remove weeds along the Great Taste cycle trail margins, and replant with native plant species over the next few years. Cycle Journeys is providing funding as part of it’s Leave Better program, which is a contribution from luggage transfer fees collected from it’s customers, with these going back into trail maintenance. Planting will commence in 2025.

Cycle Journeys CEO Greg Cayford says "This is our way of giving back to the Great Taste Trail, and the local community and environment. It’s a great project adding value alongside the Ewing Poultry free range egg farm who have planted fruit trees along the trail… in years to come riders will have some more ‘Great Tastes’ to enjoy, and planting natives is the right thing for us to be doing alongside this.

Our Story

We now have depots in Twizel, Oamaru, Hokitika and Greymouth as well as a small base in Blackball. All of this is supported from our Christchurch head office. Our bike fleet sits at just over 600, of which 110 are E-bikes and 30 are full suspension mountain bikes mainly for use on the Paparoa Track. Our vehicle fleet sits at 14 buses and vans with 15 luggage and bike trailers.

Ownership and management of Cycle Journeys is based on five decades of outdoor engagement, cycle & trekking guiding and business. Geoff & Shelley Gabites have an extensive background in outdoor equipment manufacturing, as co-owners of Macpac Wilderness Equipment and founder/manager of Adventure South. The recent appointment of Dan Thomas as General Manager continues the outdoor guiding and logistics connection.

We retain a strong engagement on a voluntary basis on both the Alps 2 Ocean and West Coast Wilderness Trail as well as a position on the national umbrella board of Nga Haerenga – New Zealand Cycle Trail.
