ALPS 2 OCEAN
Cycle the new Alps to Ocean cycleway from Mount Cook to Oamaru, part of the Nga Haerenga NZ cycle path. Follow a drop of water falling on the mighty Southern Alps as it follows the waterways of the Waitaki River to the sea. Explore the beautiful turquoise lakes and the canals and dams down through the valley. Easy grade one and two cycling on quiet roads and dedicated cycleways makes

for a great bicycle vacation, staying at beautiful B&B accommodation or your choice of hotels, motels and holiday parks. At Oamaru, take time to explore the beautiful historic Whitestone quarter with the many arts and craft stores, as well as the popular Blue Penguin colony. Start with the first three days riding down the shores of Lake Pukaiki to Twizel and across to Lake Ohau lodge and onto Omarama. Or chose your ride from short one day cycle options based around Twizel on the dedicated trail sand sealed roads. With quality cycle hire, shuttles to the start of your trail, luggage transfers and accommodation bookings available, this trail will make a great short break vacation experience in the heart of the southern alps. THE WEST COAST WILDERNESS TRAIL
True to its name, the West Coast Wilderness Cycle Trail showcases some of New Zealand’s most rugged coastlines, wild landscapes and dramatic alpine views, all on some of the smoothest trails in country. Starting from either Ross or Greymouth, you will cycle alongside picturesque lakes and historic water races, experience the charm of old gold mining and timber milling towns and explore some of the country’s most exceptional wetlands, where you might even see a native kōtuku (white heron)! Choose your starting point, upgrade to our Scenic Waterway experience, add an E-bike or remove bike hire altogether. Our flexibility means you can tailor your cycling package or service to suit you or your group. THE PAPAROA TRACK
The Paparoa Track is New Zealand’s newest Great Walk, and the first to be designed as a shared use track for both cyclists and walkers. The track crosses the Paparoa mountain ranges between the small ex-mining town of Blackball and the busy tourist village of Punakaiki on the South Island’s West Coast. The nearest towns to the Paparoa Track are Blackball, Punakaiki and Greymouth.

Graeme Slatter is a most excellent Long Haul shuttle driver, based out of our Twizel depot but he is also much much more than this.
Last month Graeme was awarded a Gold Star service medal for 25 years of service to the Aoraki/Mt Cook and Twizel communities Fire Service.(only 7% of NZs fire fighter members achieve this record!)

We have been supporting Bike Samoa by donating bikes, tyres, bike lights, cycle clothing and mechanical knowledge - we love to encourage the next generation when it comes to cycling and getting out into the great outdoors.
We have a container going from Christchurch to Samoa in January and if you have any good quality gear you would like to donate (and you can get it to us in Christchurch) we would love to hear from you.

We would also like to thank who have kindly donated a couple of boxes of gently/barely used clothing and goodies.

Thank you Claire for sending in these great photos of you cycling the lower half of the Alps 2 Ocean on a tandem.

Claires words - "....While we heard the tandem could be challenging we thought it was a good idea because I broke my finger at the adventure park three weeks before our trip was scheduled. ....
We got to the Oamaru depot and there was a string quartet playing! Turns out it was part of the festival (Victorian Heritage Festival) that was on and nothing to do with us. What a welcome though! ....
I can't choose a favourite part of the ride from Duntroon, the Elephant Rocks and the Oamaru Gardens were wonderful, and all the scenery in between. There was one section with zig zags out of a valley that was a bit tight and we walked that, but the rest was rideable on the tandem.
So many laughs were had."

Another fantastic trail on the West Coast, the Kawatiri Coastal Trail, is able to be booked through us for cycling next year.
Here's some pics from Paparoa Range School on their school camp and cycling the Kawatiri Coastal Trail with Ed from Paparoa Guided Walks.
We gave their bikes a good mechanical tune up before they went and had the best time on the trail.

Here is a pic of the intrepid Stevenson Group, from Aussie, and the Schmack group from NZ. Here they are about to set off on their 3rd day on the West Coast Wilderness Trail.
Torrential rain on the first two days didn't manage to dampen their spirits and then sunshine and blue skies for their third day was a beautiful thing to see !!
With fresh snow on the mountains and not a cloud in sight they were sure to have an amazing day.
We enjoyed having them coming and going in the Hokitika depot, and it is feeling like Summer is on it’s way at last.

Our Story

We now have depots in Twizel, Oamaru, Hokitika and Greymouth as well as a small base in Blackball. All of this is supported from our Christchurch head office. Our bike fleet sits at just over 600, of which 110 are E-bikes and 30 are full suspension mountain bikes mainly for use on the Paparoa Track. Our vehicle fleet sits at 14 buses and vans with 15 luggage and bike trailers.

Ownership and management of Cycle Journeys is based on five decades of outdoor engagement, cycle & trekking guiding and business. Geoff & Shelley Gabites have an extensive background in outdoor equipment manufacturing, as co-owners of Macpac Wilderness Equipment and founder/manager of Adventure South. The recent appointment of Dan Thomas as General Manager continues the outdoor guiding and logistics connection.

We retain a strong engagement on a voluntary basis on both the Alps 2 Ocean and West Coast Wilderness Trail as well as a position on the national umbrella board of Nga Haerenga – New Zealand Cycle Trail.
