Auckland has been wonderful, and will always be home for at least a few months a year! But it's time for bigger things... So we're off to Melbourne.
Yasna goes next week! Harry and I will be heading over in stages over the next few months.
Looking forward to catching up with some old friends (It's been 20 years!), and to all our Kiwi friends visiting...

So many ruined prints....Fortunately camera gear mostly ok.

After a solid year and a half of cloud and rain in New Zealand, we're scouting new locations for our workshops:

This is Machuca territory, deep in the Atacama Desert in Chile, one of the driest places on earth and the first UNESCO dark sky reserve.

We'll be bringing expeditions here from 2024 onwards!

Clear Skies this Weekend.
Things are looking good for Friday and Saturday. The moon will be quite large but isn't rising until the Milky Way has almost set at midnight so there's a great chance to get some shots out west.

If you want to join us there are lots of spaces open at Muriwai

Photography workshops and tours in New Zealand, Chile and Brazil. Specialists in low light astrophotography and technically challenging photographs.

First shot with the Benro Polaris
This is the Milky Way over the Warkworth Satellite Station, shot during a High Res Tours workshop.

I've had this little guy in my bag for a few weeks waiting for the rain to stop... and waiting and waiting and waiting.

When it finally did a few days ago in Warkworth the fog immediately rolled in so I only had time for a single frame.

Lumix S5
Samyang 14mm f/2.8
1 x frame for stars, ISO 1250, 2 minutes
1 x frame for foreground, same settings

Thoughts on the Benro:

The Benro Polaris automatically polar aligns using some combination of GPS and Compass. It's extremely easy. After that it functions as a goto mount that pairs to your phone. You just tell the phone what star/constellation you want to see and it goes there - showing a live view display of what your camera is seeing right on your phone.

This works much better with a new mirrorless camera, especially something like the Lumix S5 which can keep it's own LCD going while tethering, and use the live view boost to keep things a bit brighter. I tried it with a couple of sonys and it didn't play quite so nicely.

The tracking was better than I'd get on something like the move-shoot-move, or the iOptron Sky Tracker Pro, but not as good as the Sky Guider Pro or the Star Adventurer....

At 200mm I was getting 2 minute exposures with the iOptron Sky Guider Pro, but only about 15 seconds with the Benro... that said the benro was far far quicker to both setup and find the star I wanted to photograph. Some of this may have been my calibration of the unit - still testing that.

There's also no counterweights or balancing necessary with the benro, which makes it mich lighter to carry around than many other trackers.

For wide milky way shots, anything up to about 50mm it's ideal. If you're using telephoto lenses for deep space it might struggle a bit (I'm still testing this)

Of course it does a lot more than just astro tracking - it's also an excellent 360 automated panorama head, does time lapses, HDR, all kinds of things.... Very different from most competitors (such as SYRP) as it completely takes over your camera, even the focusing, which is quite impressive.

I've still a lot to learn, but this device has rendered almost all of my syrp gear obsolete. It's extremely well built, and the app is astonishing considering benro aren't known for their software.

Photos from Warkworth last night, while testing a new location for a workshop. I had a very lucky 20 minute break between the rain and the fog.
