“I’m appalled at the actions of the Government. It has consistently shown contempt for evidence and a willingness to bulldoze communities and councils when they don’t agree."

The Government’s gazumping action over Otago’s water shows just how far it’ll go to pursue a pro-agricultural agenda, writes David Williams

Who ever thought New Zealand Fish and Game was "to the left of the Green Party?" Michael Laws attacks Fish and Game as "schizophrenic." He embarrasses himself here and sounds like a raving Kiwi Donald Trump--or Shane Jones. This guy is an elected official, albeit a carpet bagger. Has he ever fished, hunted or spent a day on a river?

Tell Parliament's Environment Committee to delay the Fast-Track Bill until scientists and the public have their say on lobbyist-sponsored projects. The Environment Court and High Court have already ruled against many of these zombie projects.

Forest & Bird has fought hard for months to force the National-led coalition government to reveal the projects it wants automatically fast-tracked through Schedule 2. That list is out this afternoon and it’s as bad as we feared.

Some on the list are developments that Forest & Bird has spent years successfully opposing in court, essentially ‘zombie projects’. This includes the Ruataniwha dam in Hawke’s Bay and Trans-Tasman Resources’ proposal for seabed mining off the Taranaki coast.

Forest & Bird is now calling on Parliament’s Environment Committee to delay reporting back on the Fast-track Approvals Bill until it has time to properly consider the proposed projects.

It’s a dark day for New Zealand democracy when the select committee tasked with assessing a law doesn’t actually get to see the whole law. Because developments referred to, or on, the schedule are almost certain to go ahead, it’s absolutely critical that proper scrutiny happens now so that people can understand the ways existing environmental protections are being breached and the harm that will be caused.
