The Pecos was the first river I fished as a child. A lot of folks have heard about the trout fishery in New Mexico. But the warm water section in Texas offers crystal clear water flowing through stunning canyons and some of the most extensive petroglyphs in that part of the world.

A recap from a four day float down the Pecos river in south Texas. For more info on this trip and others like it contact JD Roberts at finstincts.net

Care about New Zealand's rivers? If you're near Christchurch next Tuesday, Sept. 10, think about attending this meeting.

Come along and find out more about the Government’s Fast-track Approvals Bill – how it will override existing conservation legislation, prevent public consultation, and allow damaging projects to go ahead.Featuring:

Geoff Palmer, perhaps New Zealand's best constitutional scholar, explains why this government threatens democracy, the environment and our sense of community. Just because you can get away with a power grab short term doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Opinion: Constitutional law expert and former Prime Minister Geoffrey Palmer takes a deep, concerned look at the risks this Government is taking with hasty law changes

What is the market for cow-less precision-fermentation milk and cheese products? Surely the environmental impact is far smaller.

New Zealand labs could soon start mass-producing "dairy-identical" proteins without using cows. The EPA has approved an application from Daisy Lab to scale up its work on "precision fermentation." In this case, yeasts are genetically modified so that when they are fermented they produce a protein l

Interesting Lancet article on how "market fundamentalism," ie, leaving issues like public and environmental health, exposed to powerful multinationals just makes us and our environment sicker and our government's ability to do anything about it weaker. This "has created a pathological system in which commercial actors are increasingly enabled to cause harm and externalise the costs of doing so. Consequently, as harms to human and planetary health increase, commercial sector wealth and power increase, whereas the countervailing forces having to meet these costs (notably individuals, governments, and civil society organisations) become correspondingly impoverished and disempowered or captured by commercial interests." Think of how Big Dairy and Irrigation have captured out government at all levels, including our research centers. "This power imbalance leads to policy inertia; although many policy solutions are available, they are not being implemented. Health harms are escalating, leaving health-care systems increasingly unable to cope."

Although commercial entities can contribute positively to health and society there is growing evidence that the products and practices of some commercial actors—notably the largest transnational corporations—are responsible for escalating rates of avoidable ill health, planetary damage, and soci...

Fonterra is New Zealand's single biggest polluter of greenhouse gas emissions. Finance Minister Nicola Willis used to lobby for them. Associate Minister Andrew Hoggard is a former head of Federated Farmers. This corrupt, self-dealing government has now removed the requirement for monitoring greenhouse gas emissions from farms, which were already excluded from the Emissions Trading Scheme. New Zealand needs more than just more modern environmental regulation. It also needs to beef up its conflict of interest laws, which remain among the weakest in the Western World. Small wonder we have the government we do and environmental trends get worse every year.

For the fourth year running, Fonterra is New Zealand's largest producer of greenhouse gas emissions, according to data gathered by the Environmental Protection Authority.

Is there a public mandate to make it easier to pollute New Zealand rivers? Andrew Hoggard, former Federated Farmers President and current associate Environment Minister, says there is. This is after pledging in 2020 to "work more harmoniously" with Fish and Game. That promise aged as well as a co**se.

With allies in Government, industry lobbies are requesting changes to cornerstone environmental legislation governing nutrient discharge into waterways

Te Waikoropupū Springs are the largest freshwater springs in New Zealand, the largest cold water springs in the Southern Hemisphere and contain some of the clearest water ever measured. This current government wants to fast-track a mining project by Australian company Siren Gold that could ruin it all. Steve Abel and David Parker lay out the political reality of the current government trying to sell or pollute all the source water in the country, the sixteen watersheds with National Water Conservation Orders. Some things are too valuable. Remove all 16 WCOs from any fast-track legislation!

Delivery of the 24,446 signatures strong 'Don't Fast-track Te Waikoropupū' petition to parliament on Tuesday the 30th July, which was met by a strong and imp...

Have you ever fished the Rakaia River? If so, could you tell us of your experiences? The New Zealand Salmon Anglers Association is compiling an oral history of the river to assess what's been lost since the John Key government, Transpower then later Manawa Energy, and Environment Canterbury committed enough environmental vandalism on the river to all but wipe out its ecosystem. Future Rivers and the New Zealand Federation of Freshwater Anglers are collaborating with the Salmon Anglers, Fish and Game, and the Environmental Defence Society to argue for healthier flows. This river has a Water Conservation Order on it, supposedly the highest level of protection in the country, but the dairy industry has made a mockery of the WCO. The current governing coalition is working to gut the meat of what remains of the Resource Management Act to make pollution and future hydro schemes easier, while excluding the public and scientists from having any say.

This great Yeti-sponsored documentary captures the magical Key West of a bygone era. In the late 60s and 70s poets, writers, and musicians joined the pirates and hippies and drug runners at the outlaw tip of the American empire to pursue their love of literature and fishing. Tom McGuane and his friends Jim Harrison, Richard Brautigan, Russell Chatham and Jimmy Buffett made a brilliant film with Guy De La Valdene and Christian Odasso. "Tarpon" remains one of greatest fly-fishing documentaries ever made.

In the late 60's a group of poets, writers and musicians descended upon the lawless tip of the United States to pursue their love of literature and fishing (...

Good exerpt from Dr Mike Joy's new environmental memoir. How does a normal person who grew up working on farms become radicalised? It's easy when the local river makes kids sick.

When Mike Joy discovered the hard way that all of Feilding's sewage pours into the river, his fight for freshwater began.

Dame Anne Salmond continues her excellent series of columns on the government's backward, self-destructive pro-pollution policies. "The Government’s hostility towards ‘our unique natural environment’ is not only undemocratic; it is economically self-destructive."

There is still time for the coalition to regain trust, but a big step would be honouring National's promise to safeguard our environment

New Zealand must get serious about nitrates. They're poisoning our source water, killing our rivers, native species and trout, and causing cancer and blue-baby syndrome. Yet this current government wants to make it easier to pollute.

Yes, they ban books here. Wellington Council tries to censor discussion of a new environmental memoir at the local library. Dr Mike Joy won the Fleming Award, New Zealand's highest honor for independent environmental research. But somehow the discussion of nitrates, like that of climate change, is too political. The merger of corporate and political power is the definition of fascism, Mussolini said.

They invited Mike Joy to speak about his memoir. Then they got worried he was too political, and called it off.

Big Dairy wants the current government-by-lobbyists to overturn a High Court decision by making their decades' long environmental crime retroactively legal. Big Dairy actually has the stones to clearly place their private profit ahead of public and environmental health.

Lobby groups claim the decision – reinforcing that water health must be at the forefront of decision-making – creates a “regulatory roadblock ... no farmer can pass through”. Leave a comment on the story.

A growing number of women find fly fishing enhances mental and physical health and even helps them in business relationships.

When you think of fly fishing, you likely think of middle-aged white men. But now there’s a booming interest from successful women and fishing experts suggest that women are particularly well-suited to excel at the sport. And the "sorority" of female anglers may just help you close your next deal.

This government is the worst for the environment in New Zealand history. It radically choses pollution as a business model, public health the environment be damned. This is bad government. And it's bad business for a country trading on the "100 percent Pure" New Zealand brand.

As the impacts of climate change hit ever closer to home, the coalition looks set to wind back the clock on key protections.

Before 2024 I’d never fished a Thomas & Thomas rod. I’d thrown them at fly fishing shows, and wiggled a few at fly shops, but I never had the chance to get one out on the water.
