The northern royal albatross quietly glided into Dunedin NZ last week, so the date has been set to ring the bells to celebrate their return - Tuesday 24th September at 1pm NZST.

Don't have a bell but still keen to be involved wherever you are in the world? Play this video on full volume, featuring bell sounds from churches and cathedrals.

Dust off your bells, the wandering royals are set to return.

After a year at sea, our northern royal albatrosses are not far off returning home to Pukekura/Taiaroa Head. This special Dunedin tradition has spread around the world and heralds not only the start of the start of spring, but the start of their breeding season, too.

Be part of this year’s celebration by signing up for The Royal Albatross Centre's albatross alert, so you know exactly when to chime in. You can also keep an eye on the sky via the live Royal Cam and find out how you can donate to help protect these wonders: https://dunedinnz.co/3ExnsOL

If you want to get as far away from London as possible without leaving Earth, Dunedin NZ is your answer. As London's antipodal-twin (the closest city directly opposite London on the globe), you could say we are polar opposites, but similar in many ways.

It's definitely worth the long journey from London

Any guesses which bird we're getting behind this year?

A few more clues that might help...

🐧 One of the rarest birds of its type in the world.
🐧 Only 131 breeding pairs on mainland NZ.
🐧 They could be extinct here in the next 10-20 years.
🐧 Māori name translates to "noise shouter".
