The world-renowned Marlborough wineries are in many senses the founding location for the international attention New Zealand wine has received.

Blenheim and the Marlborough region has managed to perfectly harness the natural attributes of plenty of sunshine hours, fertile free-draining soil and low rain fall. Combine these qualities with some outstanding grapevine varieties and the perfect recipe flourished.

The 1980's really put New Zealand on the world stage for a host of outstanding Sauvignon Blanc wines and today, the region boasts about 70% of the country's total wine production - curated by local wine producers, making it the countries largest wine producing area. With the development of further grapes such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the area has become an incredibly attractive destination for any wine aficionado.

And with some good fortune, the Coastal Pacific train travels right through the heart of Marlborough, in some cases dissecting some of the many local vineyards. If you have the time to break your journey, hopping off at the Blenehim 'Wine Station' and spending a few days exploring this countryside will add some wonderful local flavour (literally) to your journey.

Cinque Terre.

One of our teams favourite journeys. What better way to link five of the most picturesque Italian fishing villages than by a coastal train. This is Kylie’s favourite rail excursion and one she would return to without a moment’s hesitation. She admits that the attraction is not the train itself but the places the train takes you to. That said, because of the train, there are very few cars spoiling the village’s ambience and there are naturally some great views from the carriage window along the way.
