When to go: Alaska’s Seasons..

In Spring (Apr/May) the first voyages depart, bears to emerge from their dens, harbour seals congregate at river mouths, sea otter pups are born, and birdlife arrives for the summer.

In Summer (Jun/Jul/Aug) there is the greatest number of voyage departures, humpback and killer whales are frequently observed. In mid July sockeye salmon start to migrate into the spawning streams where brown and black bears patiently wait for them and birds are at the peak of their breeding season.

As Autumn (Sep) arrives voyages continue until early September, raptor migration is underway, watch golden eagles fly along ridge tops in alpine areas and Beaver are particularly active constructing winter food. With longer nights there is a chance for seeing Northern Lights on clear evenings.

Our adventure day in Niue took us to the breathtaking Togo Chasm, which we had previously visited in 2017. However, the road to the forest entrance, that leads to the chasm, is rough and neglected due to its location on the less frequently used western side of the island.
Photos below tell the story. This is one of my most favourite places - simply amazing.

Niue Orientation Tours showed us the best spots with lots of info & advice along the way.
We’ve been before but a few things I learnt & had my memory freshed are;
- Niue’s original name was Nukututaha - The Island that stands alone.
- Niue is the largest uplifted coral atoll in the world.
- Niue is 265 square kilometres - half the size of Lake Taupo.
- Niue is a volcanic island with the top being 60 - 80 metres of coral.
- Niue has no rivers.
Simply beautiful coastline & love the natural laid back no frills vibe.

🧡Vancouver is also called “Hollywood of the North”. In North America the city comes second after Los Angeles in TV production and third in feature film production (after Los Angeles and New York). Most productions made in Vancouver are American, whereas most Toronto based productions are Canadian.

🧡Vancouver’s cruise ship terminal is the 4th largest in the world. Most of the ships departing from the terminal are headed to Alaska. The last cruise of the 2016 season will leave the Canada Place Terminal on October 19th!

🧡Vancouver is a very young city. It was only incorporated in 1886 and thus shares the same anniversary with the founding of Coca-Cola. On June 13 1886, the Great Vancouver Fire burnt down the city and only a few buildings survived the fire.
