Tuna kuwaruwharu (long-finned eel) is a mystical creature who lives in our rivers and lakes for many decades before returning to the ocean to swim north for months and thousands of kilometers to have their babies then die. Those babies all alone drift back on the same currents that bought us to New Zealand and return to our rivers. Our Tuna kuwaruwharu are Taonga, treasures to be cherished and protected. However, our wetlands are disappearing, and our waterways are polluted, destroying the habitat of our Tuna kuwaruwharu. Please do your part to help, clean a river, leave the bogs alone and treasure the gifts we have today for all to enjoy. To learn more about Mahinga Kai join us for a Huriawa Peninsula tour. For bookings and group rates, please e-mail us at [email protected]

About Our Tours

Karitāne Māori Tours is located on the beautiful east coast of New Zealand's South Island, only a 30-minute drive from Otago's largest city, Dunedin.

Our tours are owned and operated by Kāti Huirapa ki Puketeraki, the local Maori iwi (people) of the area who wanted to share their passion for waka (canoes) and cultural practices with people from all over the world.

Our waka is a combination of old and new, double-hulled and outrigger. The revitalisation of waka on our river follows the strong cultural traditions of the past on the Waikouaiti River and links the people of Kāti Huirapa to the landscape.
