Thinking of making a trip to Wellington soon? Well February is the month to go because Wellington harbour will be the stunning setting for the launch of next year's New Zealand Festival. A fleet of waka will glide into the harbour at dusk on February 23, to be greeted by a karanga from actors, choirs, and a thousand-strong haka led by Te Ati Awa.

The earliest known name for Wellington city, derived from Māori legend, is Te Upoko o te Ika a Maui or the head of Maui’s fish. Find out more about the Māori history of Wellington below!
