Exploring Stony Batter with .nz. Stony Batter was one of several sites selected for a WWII Coastal Defence system, resulting in the development of the Stony Batter Fortress. From the site, there is an uninterrupted view of the Hauraki Gulf and the approach to Auckland. Development of the underground fortress with its three gun emplacements started in 1942 in secrecy. Similar gun emplacements were developed on Whangaparaoa Peninsula and Motutapu Island, with observation posts on Rangitoto Island and Tiritiri Matangi. This network was intended to engage enemy ships at ranges of over 30 km, well beyond the ability of most to fire back.

The guns were never fired and were eventually removed. For many years, the site was derelict, and the landowner blocked access. However, it remained well-preserved, and public access was restored in 2001. The Stony Batter Protection and Restoration Society took over the management and restored tunnel access. Under a DOC concession, the tunnels were reopened for guided public visits in 2020. The wider site and empty emplacements can be visited anytime.

From the signposted reserve entrance on the Stony Batter Walk, follow the path towards the group of trees picnic area and small reserve museum. You will see several small signs that mark the location of buildings that have long been removed. The museum is an old bunker, and the main tunnel access is just to the right. Neither is always open, so check the website here. You may also want to ring in advance. The tracks around the reserve are not particularly well marked, but you can walk up the hill, spot air vents, and find the three gun emplacements. One is to the museum’s west through the trees, and two are to the east on the top of the hill.

To reach Stony Batter from Onetangi, take Waiheke Road to Man O’War Road, then Stony Batter Rd. Park at the end of the road in the car park and walk 2 km to the reserve along the private road.

Exploring our neighbourhoods with .nz The Cascades Loop track (Cascades Waterfall) is short in Whakanewha Regional Park. It runs through a beautiful strip of forest and down to a modest but picturesque series of small waterfalls through a rocky gully. A seat and picnic spot are at the bottom of the falls.

You can access the loop track along the Nikau Track from the Sculpture Car Park on Gordon Road or the car park on Carsons Road. The two options are similar in length and attractive forest walks. Allow about an hour to get from the car parks and back.

Getting to know our neighbourhoods in Waiheke Island with .ideasnz
🌴🏖Palm Beach is a beautiful, north-facing beach on Waiheke Island within Mawhitipana Bay. The adjacent suburb is also named Palm Beach. In the late 1800s, the beach was one of the places on the island that attracted day-tripping Aucklanders. Phoenix palms were planted during the first housing development in 1922, for which Palm Beach was named.

The beach is about 600 metres long, with a smaller western section separated by a large group of rocks. This section, known locally as Little Palm, is sometimes used by nudists. Cliffs and steep hills are at both ends of the bay.

The beach is safe for swimming. At the main access, there is a large grass reserve with picnic tables and a playground. A second picnic area is at the beach’s eastern end.

You can take a bus from Oneroa to get there. If driving from Wharf Road, take Bay Road, then cross Hill Road onto Palm Road. Follow this until you see the car park and reserve. There is also a nearby convenience store and cafe. Te Ara Hura also runs along the beach, entering from Cory Road and Miro Road at the west end and on Hill Road at the east end.

Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf has many islands. However, only Waiheke Island, east of Waitamata Harbour and Rangitoto Island, is big and close enough to sustain a substantial population and services. The island is the second-largest in the Hauraki Gulf. Access is a 35-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland to the ferry terminal in Matiatia Bay.

The island is a superb destination for travellers, from day trips to multi-day stays. For foodies, there are around 30 wineries and many restaurants and cafes. For outdoor activities, there are several excellent beaches and interesting walking trails. The trails include Te Ara Hura, an 87 km loop around much of the island, walks around Stony Batter and within Whakanewha Regional Park.

During the Māori migration, several ocean-going migratory waka visited the gulf. Permanent settlements were established on Aotea / Great Barrier and Waiheke. Ngāti Pāoa became dominant by the early 1700s. As with the other main Auckland iwi, they were regularly threatened by Ngāpui invasion from the north, which they fended off until the 1820s.

Captain James Cook moored in what is now Man o’War Bay, noting that the many nearby ancient kauris would make perfect ship masts for the British navy. He had a good experience in the region, which led to a flow of whalers and sealers who readily traded with Ngāti Pāoa.

Kauri harvesting stimulated European activity, and in 1836, Thomas Maxwell established a shipyard at Man o’War Bay. Ngāti Pāoa provided timber and food for the shipyard, then timber to build early Auckland.

By the 1900s, the trees were mostly gone, and the land was used for cattle farming. It had also become a day trip for Aucklanders, hence names like Palm Beach and Blackpool. By the mid-1920s, holiday homes were being built. Since the 1980s, it has become easier to live there and more interesting for visitors, with the appearance of the local wine industry, related hospitality activities and modern ferry services.
