I had an interesting discussion with a new CEO today around an incident in his executive team that pointed to lack of alignment around what high performance leadership is in his organisation. he admitted that this discussion had not been had to his knowledge and was a contributor to the issue he was dealing with.

In this blog the writer, Steve McKee explores the weather its power or influence that's critical. He states

Leaders can choose whether they develop power or influence, but Steve McKee says only one leads to effective leadership.

I think I could dedicate a regular post just to meetings! Meetings come a close second to email as the Bain of most peoples work-lives. In this post the author questions whether meetings are a reflection of the organisation’s culture. I think it has some validity from my observations over a number of years. The post also has a link to meeting effectiveness checklists for both virtual and face-to-face meetings.

Five decades of research shows the huge impact of organizational culture on outcomes like Return on Investment, stock prices, service/quality levels, productivity, sales, profitability, cost-effectiveness, and similar results. Organizational culture is also a key factor in levels of employee engagem...

After three years of battling the implications and impacts of covid on management practices there's still no agreement as to how it changes your approach. Hybrid work seems to be a reality in many organisations I deal with. How this is managed is many and varied. The question that doesn't seem to being addressed is the root of the issue....Leadership / management practices. This blog starts to explore this and the need to move from an activity to outcomes focus. It will be difficult for many organisations / managers to understand the "Managing Peoples Work" doesn't give the best outcome!

A few months ago, I saw a piece of research which has stuck with me. Research by Microsoft was looking into how Hybrid Work was working, and found out the following shocking statistic: 87% of employees feel like they are just as productive working remotely as they are in the office But 88% of manage...

You may be surprised how many people I work with suffer from “Imposter Syndrome”. Sometimes these people come across as very confident, even though in their mind they’re not. RThe question is how do you over come this? In this HBR Blog they focus on the need to build courage as the starting point. If you suffer from self-doubt or lack confidence may be there’s some gems in this for you.

Self-doubt is a pervasive and often paralyzing concern, and research has repeatedly shown that it impacts women more than men. So what makes high-achieving women power through their self-doubt? According to the author’s research, they focus on building up their courage, not their confidence. She o...

Most leaders wear a lot of hats in their role and seem to continually question which ones they should be wearing and when. In this blog, Wally Block has distilled these hats down to three and then questions how do you balance them. I found it simplifies the areas of focus for a leader and hopefully it will reasonate!

Leadership is a complex, high stakes balancing act. Here’s why.

I was taught many years ago that when you're having a collaborative conversation you need to explore and understand the other person's perspective while explaining and advocating your own. In doing so, the objective is to use this approach to come up with a way forward that you both agree with. If you can't achieve this then the next step is to agree to a "Third" perspective that is acceptable to both of you..

In this blog Ken Norton uses this technique to underpin have a difficult conversation, especially as he says when there's an elephant in the room. Ken gives you a simple structure for preparing for one of these conversations and if need be how to craft the "Third Story"

It’s a pity that we need to continue to remind people of the risk of burn-out. In his latest blog, Nick Petrie (based in Nelson) outlines his suggested approach to dealing with this issue. The suggestions are underpinned with his own research and as I’d expect pragmatic. Have a look at

Why do some hard workers burnout and others are fine? Over the past two years I’ve been studying, this question. The simplistic view is that burnout is caused by too much work. While this is a factor – no one is burning out the beach – it is not that simple. In our interviews we saw that it wa...

How many of you profess to wanting to be more proactive in your role? How many of you would consider yourself very action oriented, results driven and customer focused? Those two approached are often in dynamic tension and normally mean that you spend a lot of time fire fighting and in the weeds.

For those of you that aspire to change your behaviours might be interested in this blog from the Eblin Group. It gives you an approach to start this journey.

Finding yourself bogged down in too many details? Here’s how one simple change can help you stay out of the weeds.

Meetings, Bloody Meetings!
They are still the bain of peoples life at work. If you're responsible for setting them up here's some ideas as to how to streamline them.

This isn't the first time I've reposted productivity related blogs. This one struck a chord as I've been working with some managers that have taken steps to start to control their emails. These steps have included:

Better management of their notifications on their devices to reduce distractions
Using smart mails boxes to sideline CC emails and newsletters or anything that has "Unsubscribe" in. the footer.
Talking to their teams to help them released the impact of CCing people into what they send out.

Every manager that has tried simple things like this has got better control on their inbox.

This blog starts to look at productivity through an email lens and give some additional ideas for improving workflow.

It's often the simplest behaviors that lead to the greatest transformation. Here is a case in point.

We can all probably relate to having experienced low psychological safety at some point within a team or a group - that immediate feeling of being unable to speak up with ideas, questions or concerns due to a fear of ridicule or hurt or being embarrassed.

We know its critical factor for team performance.

The highest-performing teams have one thing in common: psychological safety — the belief that you won’t be punished when you make a mistake. Studies show that psychological safety allows for moderate risk-taking, speaking your mind, creativity, and sticking your neck out without fear of having i...

Leadership "Presence" at any level is hard to define. The reality seems to be that people recognise it when they experience it and when they don't. This blog hopefully will give you some ideas of the things you need to do to enhance your presence as it seems to be as important as what you deliver.

In our ever-changing business and leadership world, the ability to lead requires an awareness of self that is anchored in executive presence.
