A 1000m inflatable artwork called Arborialis Iuminarium is coming to Christchurch as part of the Bread and Circus World Buskers Festival.

The biggest act at the next Bread and Circus World Buskers Festival isn’t human at all.

Rather it’s a 1000m² inflatable artwork called Arborialis Iuminarium – a pneumatic sculpture with tunnels, domes and a “sensory-drive experience of colour, light and sound”.

It will be hard to miss in Christchurch’s Cathedral Square and tickets cost $18 to $20 for a 20-minute experience.

Overall, 2024’s festival will run for 10 days – from January 19 and 28 – and is focused on the central city.

Three busking pitches will established at Hack Circle (at the corner of Cashel and High streets), the Bridge of Remembrance, and the corner of Hereford and Colombo streets.

The recently opened Church Pub on Manchester St will host adult-oriented, night events on the opening weekend that require tickets. Among them will be previous Iron Chicken-winner Jarred Fell in a comedy-magic show called Belief.

The Isaac Theatre Royal will host the annual and often sold-out festival gala (age 15+, hosted by Guy Williams) and a kids gala on the closing weekend.

Returning acts include Guru Dudu’s Silent Disco Walking Tours, to be held several times a day on most days. Tickets cost $27.

Local favourites MulletMan and MiM will busk almost every day in the central city sites. New Zealander Louise Kerr, in her Punk the Clown act, will also busk almost daily in the CBD.

Piano Man Trevor Jones will host a singalong at Christchurch Casino the first Saturday night.

Newcomers include Gaku the Juggling Drummer, who boasts over 4 million TikTok followers, and Estupido Compania from Argentina and Uruguay, who do “freakshow physical comedy”.

Other new performers to Christhcurch include Chicago-born Leah Orleans, who blends contortion and acrobatics in her Tiny Girl Big Show; Gracie B’s hula-hooping lifesaving adventures with A Day at the Beach; and Sam Goodburn, who combines unicycle and tightwire.

“The 2024 event is more immersive, encouraging people to step out of their daily routines, laugh, dance and interact with performers on a more intimate level than ever before,” festival director Scott Maidment said.

Fantastic news! Well done to our SKAL International Christchurch members who are winners at the HM Awards!

We love celebrating the success of our Skålleagues, congratulations to who won at the HM Awards for Hotel and Accommodation Excellence in Sydney this week. 🥂👏

It was fantastic to see our own Craig Wood, General Manager of Rydges Latimer Christchurch, recognised with a highly commended as “New Zealand General Manager” AND with the hotel winning “New Zealand Upscale Hotel”.

Congrats also to Angela Webster and the Fable Hotels and Resorts team for having Hotel Fitzroy, Auckland highly commended in the “New Zealand Boutique Hotel” category.

To our Skålleagues from Sudima Hotels – Maree Welgus, Leigh Higgins and Hemal Ghetla…..well done for your highly commended recognition in two hugely important categories – “Service to the Community” as well as the “Environmental Program”.

Well done SKAL International Christchurch! Raising over $13,000 for the Christchurch City Mission is wonderful news for Christmas!

WOW – Thank you Skål Christchurch members for your support at our last event. If it was donating an item for the auction, buying an item or two….or convincing others at your table to put their hand up – THANK YOU. 🙌🎄😁❤️

We raised over $13,000 for the , along with donating 100’s of items for the mission pantry and food bank.

In these ever changing and challenging times, it is wonderful to see the laughter, love and compassion shown with your support.

City Missioner, Corinne Haines was blown away with the generosity of our Skålleagues and friends. The Christchurch City Mission foodbank will provide over 1,800 special Christmas food parcels in the week leading up to the 25th. This is a huge effort from their volunteers with an massive increase on their normal average of 350 parcels. This will give over 6,000 people in Christchurch a wonderful and memorable Christmas Day.

SKAL International Christchurch always have a fantastic fundraiser lunch.....if you are in Ōtautahi Christchurch leading up to Cup and Show Week, they are would love for you to join them!

Join us for our November Luncheon and annual auction at The George on Thursday 9 November.

The event will commence with drinks at 12.30pm, and formalities will conclude by 3.30pm.
