What COVID-19 means for your wedding

For those who have been in touch regarding their soon-to-be wedding days, here is some information regarding your marriage licence. This is only if you have already applied for your marriage licence through Births, Deaths, and Marriages (BDM)

Originally it was stated that they would have to be applied for again (if your new wedding date was to be outside the 3 month validation period of the licence) but now it seems they are being lenient and a letter to the Register General with details as stated below will likely be approved.

Contact me in the first instance if you want to discuss further or need any help :)

'While couples can still use their existing marriage licence as long as the new ceremony date is within three months (from the date of issue of the licence), for those couples who are not able to reschedule within the three month period they would need to re-apply and pay again.'

"[couples] need to email us [BDM] and ask for a refund unless they are still planning to marry within the 3 month validity of the licence. All refund requests are likely to be approved."

At this stage we have not been advised of any change to our policy regarding marriage licence refunds.
Under our current policy only in exceptional circumstances will a refund be made after the licence application has been lodged.
To request a refund for the marriage licence (as well as any certificate that has been ordered) the couple need to put their request in writing, addressed to the Registrar General.
They will need to state in detail the reason for refund. Also included in the letter must be full names and contact details of both parties including residential and postal addresses
Refund request letters should be sent addressed to:
Registrar General
Births, Deaths and Marriages
PO Box 10526
Wellington 6143
For any other enquiries please reply to this email, visit our website at www.govt.nz/bdm, or contact us by phone.
