It's with a heavy heart I wish to let you all know of the passing of long time supporter of the Haast Hollyford Highway, Allan Lemm.
Allan worked as a welder and fabricator on the Haast bridge for the Ministry of Works at Haast, he was a keen life long tramper and any time he had off he would take to the hills all over the countryside, he especially loved South Westland and came back many times over his long life, in 1959 he and three others tramped the entire route of the HHH, this started his long advocacy for building the HHH. He also worked for Les Hutchins of Fiordland Travel ( now known as Real Journeys ) as a Jet boat driver on the Manapouri Hydro Project and was Les's first employee, Les had him fill in half a season as skipper on the TSS Earnslaw a few years later. Allan worked all over New Zealand and Australia spliting time between working in tourism and engineering. In the early 1990's Alan brought a home in Queenstown to retire to, Allan spent his last four years in the Bupa home Queenstown, he was 91 .
