Eastern Coromandel report
Jason Harris - Strikezone Sportfishing NZ
Another month has passed us by and all of a sudden we are into winter! The temperatures have certainly dropped through May, but overall sea conditions haven't been too bad with quite a few fishable days being had. The winds have mainly been from a westerly quarter. Although those who fish out west will be cursing this direction, it’s good times here on the East Coast making for a flat sea. Even if it's blowing hard we can still fish close to the coast in relative comfort.
The star of the show has been the snapper fishing. Good consistent fishing and you don't have to travel too far to find them with some of the best catches coming from very close to home. Most of the ocean beaches are holding fish, so just sound around until you see good sign on the sounder and either anchor up or drift with softbaits, as both are working well right now. A nice by-catch has been some decent kingfish which have been snaffling a straylined bait or softbait so you never know what's going to happen on any given day.
Kingfish are still around on the inshore grounds and of course out on the deeper pinnacles, but catching livebait has been more challenging as the water cools.
Out deep the bluenose have been going well with a recent afternoon producing several fish for us up to 20kg. Getting the weather right is crucial to success if venturing out to these offshore grounds.
Southern bluefin tuna will not be far away from the Waihau Bay region so for those who chase them they are eagerly awaited.
See you out there.
