15/02/2024

The Waitangi Treaty Grounds’ new exhibition showcases 28 previously unpublished photographs by
photographer and activist James Aotearoa Pasene which revisit Waitangi Day protest actions
occurring in Waitangi from 1980 to 1985. The exhibition features original film, captured by
participants of the ‘Whakahou’ (Renew) movement, which provides a unique perspective of the
protest action.

HIKOI: GET UP STAND UP 1980-1985 debut exhibition opened at Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi
on Thursday, 1st February 2024.
From ‘Whakahou’ headquarters in South Auckland, James Aotearoa Pasene and his late life-partner
Zena Tamanui, engaged in some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most historic protest actions; including
the 1977 Bastion Point occupation, 1979 He Taua/Auckland University conflict, 1981 anti-apartheid
Springbok Tour, and of course, the Waitangi Day protests of the 1980’s. Armed with his camera,

James took snapshots of what he saw from behind the front lines as well as more intimate, behind-
the-scenes moments which give precedence to individuals over politics.

James has said the rationale behind this exhibition is to show the human side behind the protest
movement, rather than the protesting and confrontation.
“It’s not about banner-waving or the placards. As a fellow protestor, I could take photos of the things
that maybe other photographers couldn’t because I was part of the inner circle and that’s what I am
showing...this is my love letter to those times, places, and people”.
The exhibition will be open to the public until the 31st March 2024.

Coming up next Tuesday!!

New Zealand’s national day. Every year on 6 February – Waitangi Day – people of all communities and backgrounds gather at Waitangi to commemorate the first signing of New Zealand’s founding document: Te Tiriti o Waitangi, The Treaty of Waitangi, on 6 February 1840.

Waitangi Day is recognised as New Zealand’s national day and is the most important marker in the country’s history.

Ongoing recognition of the Treaty of Waitangi as the nation’s founding document will continue to keep this celebration alive, as the Treaty continues to live as part of New Zealand’s past, present and future.

On the 6 February the Treaty Grounds closes its buildings for the day and the Grounds become the location for the Waitangi Day Festival. The free festival at the Treaty Grounds starts at 5am with a dawn service in Te Whare RĹŤnanga.

All-day entertainment creates a fun, festival atmosphere, with performance stages on the Upper Treaty Grounds, at the Te Korowai ō Maikuku and on the sports field opposite the Treaty Grounds. More than 150 market stalls offer an amazing array of art and crafts, clothing and a wide variety of food options. Children’s activities include bouncy castles, kids racing cars and sports games.

Visit The Duke of Marlborough it began its life in 1827 as “Johnny Johnstons Grog Shop”. The owner Johnny Johnston was an ex convict come good, he became fluent in Te Reo and was very well regarded by the local Maori. This relationship led to Johnny being able to purchase the freehold site of the Duke – which was one of the first land sales to a European in New Zealand.

In the 1830s, Russell or Kororareka, as it was known then, was the biggest whaling port in the Southern Hemisphere and turned out to be a bit of an eye opener for the missionaries. Up to 500 whalers at a time would arrive in Russell after twelve months at sea, with Russell having no effective law enforcement agency, the scene wasn’t ideal. Prostitution was one of the area’s largest industries and many local women frequently entered into 3 week marriages.
