Foxton's hidden treasures... not visible from State Highway 1, however worthwhile to explore!

De Molen, Dutch Windmill, Foxton
Built to plans and specifications obtained from the Netherlands in 1988, it is a replica of a traditional 17th Century Dutch flour mill. It was opened on 13th April 2003.
De Molen is open to the public as a monument to the welcoming New Zealand community and to all those Dutch Immigrants that came to New Zealand from the Netherlands after WWII.

Thank you for your support in 2022/23 season! It was a bit rollercoaster, mainly thanks to uncertainty provided by NZ COVID rules and so many last minute cancellations announced by Cook Strait ferries... Anyway, it was great to be back on the road and enjoy company of overseas travellers. I love it!
Now I need to relax and recover, perhaps I should drink this barrel of beer ...no! It's ginger🍺 🤣

Born in Manapouri, Carla went to Te Anau Primary School, before she moved to Christchurch with her mother last year to further Carla’s exceptional talents. Daughter of a German-born concert pianist and music teacher Kerstin Ladstaetter, and Jimmy Calder, owner of the Manapouri Freestone Backpackers and a keen guitarist, Carla has been exposed to music and singing from birth. Carla has a beautiful singing voice and her acting is convincing, given her young age.

While there are no tour enquiries, I took these amazing teachers for a Christmas party trip ... a little payback for the fantastic environment they created for my son and many other kids 😘 ...THE BEST kindy in Te Anau!

The teachers were treated to a bit of a trip round Southland for our Christmas ‘do’ last Saturday- many many thanks to Martin Sliva (Kuba’s Dad) for providing the transport and being our chauffeur!
We had a great time - so many laughs…always good to team bond! Thanks Martin for your patience too!

European settlers arrived to mill timber in the 1850s, and the settlement boomed after the railway arrived in 1881. Government has launched its long-awaited vaccine pass, with those who are fully-vaccinated able to download a pass later on Wednesday morning.

Clifden Suspension Bridge
This historic suspension bridge was an important transport link in what was a relatively remote part of Southland; opening up of the area east of the Waiau River. It was built in 1898-99 to replace a punt which had operated since the early days of settlement. A single lane, 111.5 metre long bridge, it was originally used by horse and cart traffic and later by vehicles. It remained in operation until 1978 when a new bridge was built 130 metres downstream to cater for traffic to and from the Manapouri power project.
