With some estimates now suggesting the total could blow out beyond $3 billion, it’s clear this project has become a fiasco. The vital Cook Strait connection - so crucial for everyday trade, travel, and the tourism industry - requires a solid plan and capable leadership. Instead, we’re seeing mismanagement and spiraling costs at a time when the country needs infrastructure certainty. The previous Labour government may have set the stage for this debacle, but the current administration is simply compounding the errors. It’s high time they demonstrated accountability, delivered a coherent strategy, and provided a robust ferry service that meets New Zealand’s needs.
“It is very likely that the decisions taken to date will have a much higher cost,” says the Council of Trade Unions economist.
