3 days around the South with good bu**er, Dave. An accomplished angler, he picked up our sight fishing and NZ techniques quickly and put plenty of trout in the net. A pleasure to guide and spend time with.

The action is warming up around the river mouths on the east coast. Found a pocket where the trout were hard on bait fish, attacking my flies & naturals with gusto. Very fresh & fit fish, this one was spotted a foot off the bank in ambushing mode.

No, we’re not talking about the huge mouse eating browns of New Zealand’s South Island, but a tiny, manmade water-storage dam located in the shadow of the majestic volcanic peaks of New Zealand’s central North Island. It’s beautifully barren, epically isolated, and the trout? Magnificent in ...

Plenty of bug life around the trout streams in the last couple of weeks! With some sustained periods of settled weather the trout have really got into a feeding groove, or so it seams. In the mornings

Fantastic to be back on the rivers again, now that the new regular season has started in NZ. I quickly realized (after of course landing a couple of fish) that what I missed the most over the winter was the tangible aesthetics of being on the water

Looking back on some of last seasons photos. This was one of my favourite Rainbows. I had breifly lost sight of the fish even in the super clear water, and pitched my nymphs in well to the side to avoid unintentionally spooking it. As soon as the flies landed I saw the fish again and it speed several meters towards my stonefly and nailed it aggressively. The fish battled hard in the cool dreamy mountain water.

I've been taking guide bookings for this coming see season. DM or message me through my website to kick start the planning of your next South Island New Zealand adventure. Aussies and kiwis you have first crack to experience this for yourself 💥. Link in bio..

I read an article on fly casting recently that was complete and utter bo****ks. Worse still, it was being liked and praised up in the online community. It made me want to talk a little more about casting through my own online outlets.

Let's start with this. Accurate, consistent fly casting is something that takes practice, exactly the same as any other discipline in life. It doesn't just happen, and it's nothing to do with 'natural ability'. It's also very hard to practice when you are on the river with an 8lb brown swinging in the current, 30feet away.

Good fly casting not difficult to learn, and will do more for your fly fishing than just about any other aspect. We know more about fly casting, and how to successfully teach it, now, than we ever have. Forget what sort of rod you own, forget 10-2 o'clock casting, and definitely forget trying to 'load the rod'.

I like to get on the field and throw to targets. Learning to lock and hold your eyes on a target will have a huge impact on your accuracy. No different to archery, or shotgun shooting. Rember , we don't cast in the general direction of the trouts rise, do we? Accuracy is one of the cornerstones of fly casting and vitally important in the New Zealand fishery, for consistent success.

There is lots of good information available to all of us these days, I'd encourage you to seek it out!! I hear way too often "I not a great caster, but I can sure catch fish". How many more fish would you catch if your casting skills improved? If any locals want to throw some casual loops over winter, hit me up..
