Today myself and Kiwi Dundee guide Jason took a reconnaissance trip out to Tiritiri Matangi Island. This island is a major conservation success story. There are no mammals on the island and there has been substantial tree and shrub planting over most of the island to recreate a beautiful coastal forest. The island is teaming with birds, many species of which are endangered and not found on the mainland anymore. We are doing 11 tours this summer for Natural Habitat Adventures which include Tititiri Matangi Island, and we are really looking forward to it!

It's 5 degrees Celsius and the shortest day of the year (winter solstice). Mt Ruapehu in the central North Island is showing off today! Also you can see Mt Ngauruhoe in the distance, which is Mt Doom in Lord of the Rings. Amazing scenery, and we have three private custom New Zealand wide tours booked already for the 24/25 season which are visiting here. What a stunning winter day here on the Coromandel Peninsula! I've just finished a tour, the sun is setting and it's very still with no wind. The temperature is 14 degrees Celsius so it's still pleasant! Normally we are not touring at this time of the year, but this year we have quite a few tours booked in June. It's definitely worth considering a visit at this time of the year!

Test trip of Kauaeranga Model Dam

Today we tested the Kauaeranga model kauri dam, which, after sitting idle for many years, has just been repaired by the Thames Rotary Club. The model dam was built in 1980 and is a 1/3 scale replica of a typical kauri dam found in the Coromandel area. In a real dam the logs were floated into the created lake, then, when full, the dam was released, washing the logs downstream. The dam was tested today at full capacity and even though the dam is a scale model, it was quite a sight to see! The dam will shortly be demonstrated to the public, times and dates will shortly be announced.

Out cycling down the Thames Coast today with a small pod of orcas for company. The orcas always turn up on the Thames Coast in spring, chasing the stingrays. #thamescoast #orca #coromandelpeninsula #newzealandwildlife
