Ōtautahi, Christchurch is looking spectacular at this time of year. So much to see at this time of year. Excited to be included as a Best Short Haul Destination in the SMH this week.

With a spectacular natural playground on its doorstep, this big small-city has undergone a revitalisation of unimaginable scale since the 2011 earthquake.

Riwai and Ash loved hosting Alexia and her family. There are no better critics or fans in this case than teenagers on a whānau | family holiday

In August 2022 Riwai resigned from serving his country. He was in the RNZN for eight years, followed by 24 years in FENZ. During his time working in the central city (Ōtautahi Christchurch) he would meet many lost and confused tourists looking for the best spaces and places. Many would kōrero (chat) about being indigenous and Māori and living and working in a city. A pattern formed and with the awhi (support) of Kahurangi Aroha Reriti-Crofts Riwai and I founded Āmiki .

Our tag line, Arrive as strangers, leave as friends, created from the feelings we both have when we go through a powhiri process on Marae. We have a burning in our puku (stomach) to share our history to preserve our future and showcase what it means for us to be Māori in Ōtautahi, Christchurch.

With the support of ChristchurchNZ, New Zealand Māori Tourism, Tourism New Zealand and RUN Aotearoa we are proud to share our persepctive of Ōtautahi, Christchurch with the world.

The hongi is exchanging the breath of life. Something our international guests get to experience on our tours. It was lovely to see it made such an impression for Madhurima.

I was born in Auckland and lived there for three years with my parents before making the permanent move to Australia. While that was always the plan, my parents have never been able to forget their first home away from home.

Wonderful honour to be in Afar yesterday. We love Āotearoa and love showcasing our culture to the world. Thank you Laura Redman and Afar.

Be it a haka dance or a guided hike, to experience Māori culture is to experience the best of Aotearoa.

We are a little bias but totally think Ōtautahi Christchurch is deserved of this accolade!

Mānawatia a Matariki

Wonderful to see Riwai featured in this article as he shares how Āmiki celebrates Matariki.

As Matariki rises, where will you be, who will you remember, and what will you celebrate?

Ōtautahi | Christchurch has an awesome summer vibe at the moment.

We are enjoying being back hosting amazing people for 2023!

It is always lovely to get positive feedback and Riwai was so pleased to have met Lea and showcase our hometown to her family.

A beautiful tribute on this historical day 💙

Philip came to me today,
and said it was time to go.
I looked at him and smiled,
as i whispered that "I know"

I then turned and looked behind me,
and saw I was asleep.
All my Family were around me,
and I could hear them weep.

I gently touched each shoulder,
with Philip by my side.
Then I turned away and walked,
with My Angel guide.

Philip held my hand,
as he lead the way,
to a world where King's and Queens,
are Monarch's every day.

I was given a crown to wear
or a Halo known by some.
The difference is up here,
they are worn by everyone.

I felt a sense of peace,
my reign had seen its end.
70 years I had served my Country,
as the peoples friend.

Thank you for the years,
for all your time and love.
Now I am one of two again,
in our Palace up above.

Our story

Riwai Grace has been finding lost and disappointed tourists since 2005. He has a passion for sharing his favourite spots and putting a smile on the faces of the people he meets. Together with co-founders Cate Grace and Lou McLeod, he discovered a solution to his concern for visitors.

Amiki was launched in Christchurch in November 2018. Amiki is for people who travel the world, are curious about cultures and exploring local ways of living. We are local, authentic storytellers who host tours on foot weaving the laneways and city spaces revealing hidden heritage and taonga.

Our local crews create experiences where manaakitanga and exceptional service are the norm. We are passionate about creating a world where people are welcomed as strangers and farewelled as friends. We exist to connect visitors to quality unique experiences in our city urban suburbs.
