Mt Heale Hut is always a welcome sight when we are on the Hirakimatā/Mt Hobson track because we’ve done the stair climb, we’ve aced the summit and now we’re on the downhill. Whoop! 🙌🏻

That’s Te Hauturu-o-Toi/Little Barrier Island winking at us from across the Gulf.

Te Urewera is 212,000 hectares of isolated rainforest in the North Island. Remote, rugged and immense. The silence is deafening here, no road noise, no sirens, no hum of human activity - it’s truly peaceful.

Lake Waikaremoana is surrounded by beech forests. Predominantly red beech down by the water, changing to silver beech as you climb up. There is black beech here too, growing in small patches in sunnier spots.

Te Urewera is known as a climax forest. A stable, mature forest that has reached the final stage of ecological succession.

Here we are taking a casual saunter down to Whalers Lookout for spectacular vistas over Tīkapa Moana/the Hauraki Gulf.

Only 19km separates Aotea/Great Barrier Island from the Coromandel Peninsula so that’s Repanga/Cuvier Island you can see in the distance.

On Day 3 of the 4-day Tongariro Hiking Tour we cross the old Hapuawhenua Viaduct on the Old Coach Road track. Built in 1908 it was in use for 80 years, before becoming obsolete. It now makes for an exciting feature on this trail.

Not every rustle you hear in the bush is a bird!

Skinks, like this mokomoko ornate skink, help pollinate native plants and spread the seeds of native trees in New Zealand forests through digesting the fruit.

Their numbers are declining due to predation and habitat loss, so always stay on the marked tracks and leave rocks and logs where they belong.

We didn’t investigate because disturbing a nest out of curiosity is never good practice.

On the Tongariro Alpine Crossing when most of the hard climbing is done, you get to look back from this epic viewpoint on where you’ve been. It’s a beautiful spot to catch your breath and take it all in for a moment.

Today marks the final day of our 2023/2024 New Zealand hiking season. We want to say a huge thank you to our guiding team for the hard work, consistent effort and professionalism they’ve brought to their mahi this summer. Our guides travel all over the North Island with our guided walking groups. Collectively they hike phenomenal distances while keeping our guests happy, safe, well-fed and entertained.
