"A Lesson in Letting Go"
Every year, Rohan's parents would make their annual trip to visit his Nani in the nearby town. This time, however, Rohan surprised them with a request.
"Amma, Baba, I think I’m old enough to go see Nani on my own. Can I take the bus this time?"
His parents hesitated but, after some discussion, they agreed. The next morning, they dropped him off at the bus station. As Rohan boarded, his mother gave him a few more pieces of advice through the window, to which he replied, slightly annoyed,
"Yes, Amma, I know. You’ve told me all this a hundred times already."
Just as the bus doors were closing, his father came up to him and, without saying a word, handed him a small envelope.
"Open this only if you need to," his father said, his voice quieter than usual.
Rohan, thrilled by the idea of traveling alone for the first time, sat by the window, watching the familiar streets gradually give way to fields and hills. Around him, strangers moved in and out of their seats. A couple argued loudly nearby, and a man kept eyeing him as if he shouldn’t be traveling alone.
Gradually, the thrill of independence faded, and an unfamiliar sense of loneliness settled in. The bus seemed too crowded, yet he felt utterly alone. He stared out of the window, but the once comforting view now felt distant. His chest tightened, and a wave of panic washed over him.
With shaking hands, he reached into his pocket and found the envelope. Slowly, he opened it, hoping for some magic words that would make him feel better. Inside was a small, folded note. He opened it, and it simply read:
“Rohan, I trust you.”
That was it. No directions, no comforting advice—just those three words. But somehow, they pierced through his anxiety. His parents had always been there, giving him instructions, guiding him every step of the way. And now, for the first time, they had stepped back and given him something else: their trust.
At that moment, Rohan realized that it wasn’t just about traveling alone. It was about them believing in him, even when he didn’t believe in himself. The emptiness he had felt moments before slowly melted away, replaced by a strange, yet comforting feeling of freedom.
This was his journey now, and for the first time, it wasn’t just about reaching a destination—it was about finding himself along the way.
