“It was very still,” wrote Wilfred Thesiger, “with the silence which we have driven from our world.”

The British explorer was sitting alone on a ridge overlooking the desert in 1947, on one of two epic journeys with the Bedouin of Arabia that took him through the massive dunes of the Empty Quarter. His book of the experience, Arabian Sands, stands as one of the classics of travel literature.

While others saw the desert as an empty void and the Bedouin as unsophisticated tribesmen, Thesiger saw them as they saw themselves—noble men for whom the desert was a sea upon which they roamed freely and found refuge. To them, and to him, the desert was life itself. Beautiful. Harsh. Epic. The "desert Arabs," as he called them, full of an "austere dignity."

Those dunes still exist, just 2 hours drive from Salalah.
To camp in them or drive over them in a four-by-four is to experience one of the sublime beauties of the Earth.

The sand is soft, fine, multicolored hues of khaki and orange, and it rolls in windswept hills hundreds of feet high as far as the eye can see, unbroken by tree or shrub or the rarest of clouds. Driving off-road into its vastness is to experience that penetrating silence, whether it’s for an hour or a night. The night sky erupts with stars, sparkling and falling, the Milky Way like a thick swirl of tapioca, and time evaporates.

A camel story :-)
A mother and a baby camel were lying around, and suddenly the baby camel asked, “mother, may I ask you some questions? Mother said, “Sure! Why son, is there something bothering you? Baby said, “Why do camels have humps?” Mother said “Well son, we are desert animals, we need the humps to store fat and we are known to survive without food and water”. Baby said, “Okay, then why are our legs long and our feet rounded?” Mother said, “Son, obviously they are meant for walking in the desert. You know with these legs I can move around the desert better than anyone does!” Baby said, “Okay, then why are our eyelashes long? Sometimes it bothers my sight”. Mother with pride said, “My son, those long thick eyelashes are your protective cover. They help to protect your eyes from the desert sand and wind”.
Baby after thinking said, “I see. So the hump is to store fat for when we are in the desert, the legs are for walking through the desert and these eye lashes protect my eyes from the desert then what in god’s name are we doing here in the ZOO!?”

Discover Salalah during Khareef!!! (Khareef = Monsoon season) Due to a rare geographical phenomenon of delicate drizzling, which begins mostly in the last week of June and continues till September. From July till September the annual summer monsoon touches the Salalah mountain slopes and the coastal area with its delicate drizzling fog. During these three months nature awakens from its slumber and a tender green carpet of grass is decorated with flowers.
Khareef festival is a fantastic opportunity every year to experience Omani culture. Fashion, national heritage, local foods and music, traditional performances and folklore troupes fire up this truly majestical carnival.
