The majestic Apu Wanakaure and its history:
Apu Wanakaure Mountain is located 15 km. to the south of the city of Cusco. It has an elevation of 4,100 masl or 13,451 ft. It is one of the highest peaks in the Cusco Valley. It is a solid rocky outcrop of the Andes.
On the high part of this mountain, there are archeological ruins distinguished by walls 60 cm. wide and 2 meters high, which are made out of fitted, worked stones that are held in place by mud mortar. These structures were religious in nature, and rendered homage cult of the Sun god. In the surrounding area, there are rock formations that had significant symbolic value for the Incas.
According to the Spanish chroniclers and to Andean mythology, Wanakaure is the most important huaca ( sacred place) and the most important oracle in the Incan culture. According to historic information, it represents the mythic personage, Ayar Huchu, who was the brother of the empire’s founder, Ayar Manco. Myths tell us that Ayar Huchu was turned into stone, and the stone remains, to this day, on Wanakaure.

The History of Inka Raccay
The archeological remains of Inka Raccay, also called “The Abandoned House of the Incas”, are located south of the City of Cusco, at an elevation of 3,640 masl. or 11,942 ft. It was constructed in a cellular fashion, somewhat similar to the structure of a honeycomb. There are a number of small and medium size rooms and walls with niches, windows, and trapezoidal doors. Because of its location and the way it was constructed, it probably functioned as a “tambo” or control gate. In Incan mythology, it was the temporary residence of Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo while they made visits into the Valley of Cusco. Trails from here connect to the majestic Apu Wanakaure, and to the archeological sites of Maukallaqta, Pumaorco, and Tambotocco. It was the first site constructed by the Incas at the very beginning of the Inca Empire.
