🐻🇵🇪 Paddington: The Peruvian Bear Who Conquered the World

The beloved Paddington bear 🧳🍊, the protagonist of books and films, has an origin that many are unaware of: he was inspired by the spectacled bear 🐻‍❄️, the only species of bear in South America and a symbol of Peruvian fauna.

📖 Michael Bond, the creator of Paddington, imagined the tender character as a traveler who arrives in London 🇬🇧 from “the depths of Peru” 🇵🇪, with his emblematic hat 🎩 and a suitcase full of stories. Although his connection with the Andean bear is never explicitly mentioned in his adventures, the influence of this species is undeniable.

🌿 In Peru, the spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus) is a protected species and is in danger due to deforestation 🌳❌ and poaching 🚫. Thanks to Paddington's popularity, many organizations have launched conservation campaigns to protect its habitat in the Andes 🏔️ and the Amazon 🌎.

Have you heard of a quipu? The ancient ‘computer’ of the Inca …

These ingenious tools were accounting devices used by the Inca Empire.

Made of cotton or camelid fibres, the length of cord, colour of the fibre, and type and placement of the knots, allowed information to be recorded and then read by those trained to do so.

Primarily used for numerical purposes, research indicates that quipus may have also been used for literary and artistic purposes as well.

The Inca adopted the system from their predecessors, with quipus discovered that date back 4,000 years, well before the Inca appeared.

We are fortunate enough to have a quipu on display in Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru.
