Exploring the Maras Salt Mines with Freddy’s Authentic Routes

Dear travelers, have you ever seen something as impressive as the Maras Salt Mines? I’m sharing this selfie, taken last week with the breathtaking salt ponds in the background, in this incredible corner of Cusco. These salt pools, formed over 100 million years ago, are a natural wonder and a testament to the ingenuity of the Andean communities.

Located on the Qoripujio mountain, the Maras Salt Mines consist of approximately 3,000 pools, each carefully dug and managed by local families. This natural hypersaline spring feeds the pools with salty water, which then evaporates under the Cusco sun, leaving behind the precious salt. This process, which takes about a month, results in a production of around two tons of salt annually, making it a crucial economic pillar for the community.

A Mystical Origin: The Legend of Ayar Cachi

According to an ancient Incan legend, many centuries ago, a young man named Ayar Cachi—one of the four brothers entrusted by the god Viracocha to found the great Inca empire—threw a stone with such force that it split a mountain, creating a gorge. His tears, shed in sorrow after being betrayed and trapped in a cave by his brothers, formed the salt ponds we now know as the Maras Salt Mines. While science gives us a different explanation, it’s fascinating how these stories intertwine with the geography and culture of the region.

Maras Salt: More Than Just a Seasoning

Maras salt is not only an essential ingredient in cooking but also has therapeutic properties. Due to its low sodium chloride content, it’s ideal for those with high blood pressure, and its minerals are recognized for their benefits in healing wounds and relieving conditions like arthritis.

This place not only supplies salt to the Cusco region and international markets but also attracts tourists from all over the world, who come to marvel at this unique landscape and learn about the ancient traditions that keep it alive.

Check out the video to appreciate even more the majesty of this place and understand why the Maras Salt Mines are one of the most incredible destinations in Peru. Enjoy!

✨🌞 Inti Raymi: The Festival of the Sun of the Incas 🌞✨

Did you know that the winter solstice, known as Inti Raymi, was the most important ritual of the Inca era? This grand event was led by the Inca king called Sapan Inka or SAPAN INTIQ CHURIN, the "Only Son of the Sun." 🌄 Due to its great significance, all the inhabitants had to fast for three days to purify themselves and ensure the ceremony's success.

At dawn, everyone would head to the Plaza de Armas in Cusco, called Huaca Pata, meaning "sacred place." They awaited the sunrise with prayers and chants, and the most climactic moment was the sun rising behind the mountains. 🌅 Following this, various rituals continued until near sunset, when the Sapan Intiq Churin announced that his father, the sun, had communicated that he would return to fill the empire with life and energy. Then, celebrations full of joy and spirituality would begin throughout the empire.

This festival was so important that the orientation of streets, temples, and plazas was often aligned with the sunrise on the winter solstice. During this time, the sun would retreat, making the days shorter and colder, and there was a fear that the sun would abandon them, condemning everyone to perpetual darkness and cold. Cities such as Cusco and Machu Picchu were even constructed with special alignment to the solstice sunrise and sunset.

For those of us who continue to hold these beliefs, this marks the beginning of a new cycle, a new Andean year. HAPPY ANDEAN NEW YEAR TO ALL! 🎉

Today, Inti Raymi remains vibrant in Cusco, with an impressive historical reenactment that attracts thousands of people from around the world. It's an opportunity to connect with our roots and admire the rich cultural heritage of the Andes.

Imagine being in Sacsayhuamán, surrounded by the majesty of the mountains, watching the sun rise on the horizon as ancient rituals unfold. 🌄✨ It is a spectacle that transports us to the past and makes us feel the power and spirituality of the Incas!

If you have the chance, don't miss this incredible celebration! 🌟

🌿 The Peruvian Okinawa: Longevity at Lake Titicaca 🌿

On the shores of the majestic Lake Titicaca lies a community that defies the passage of time. Here, life expectancy surpasses that of any city in Peru. The inhabitants of this region easily reach the age of 90, and there are tales of an elder who lived past 130.

While not as renowned as Okinawa in Japan, this native Andean community is a true longevity treasure. Their secret lies in their lifestyle, particularly in their diet. The cornerstone of their diet is a local clay called CHAK'O. They use it to prepare their meals, sauces, and seasonings, imparting not only a unique flavor but also beneficial health properties.

Amidst the natural beauty of Lake Titicaca, these individuals teach us that longevity is more than a matter of genetics: it is the result of a life in harmony with nature and a balanced diet.

We wish you all a wonderful day and express our gratitude for visiting Peru!

🎉 Exploring the Tradition of Compadres and Comadres in Cusco 🌟
In Cusco, joy and celebration are constants in our daily lives. After a week filled with laughter and camaraderie during the compadres festival, today, February 8th, we immerse ourselves in the magic and charm of honoring the comadres in a day brimming with color, tradition, and bonds of friendship.

🏞️ A Tradition Rooted in the Andean Heart: The celebration of compadres and comadres in Cusco is more than just a tradition; it's a symbol of the deep bonds that unite Cusqueñan communities. Since time immemorial, compadres and comadres have held a place of honor in people's lives in this Andean region. Beyond merely being godparents in religious ceremonies, they represent a network of support and solidarity that spans an individual's entire life.

🎨 The Spirit of Generosity and Creativity: The compadres and comadres festival is celebrated with an explosion of creativity and joy throughout the city of Cusco. In the main business centers, such as markets and plazas, as well as in traditional neighborhoods, people gather to celebrate with enthusiasm. A highlight of this festival is the making of dolls representing the comadres. Each year, in many places, dolls portraying prominent figures, such as the president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, are crafted, and jokes are played on them through the signs attached to their figures. This practice is an expression of the creativity and ingenuity of the Cusqueñan people.

🌍 Beyond Borders: What makes this festival even more special is how it transcends borders and opens doors to new opportunities. This is the case for some boys and girls from high Andean communities, such as Huilloq, Patacancha, and others, who have found in their godparents the key to a future full of possibilities. Through these relationships, some have had the opportunity to travel to other countries, such as the United States, where they have expanded their educational and cultural horizons. A tangible example of this reality is a friend from the Huilloq community, who traveled to the United States thanks to the support of her godparents. During her time in this country, she not only acquired excellent English proficiency but also excelled as a professional in her field, demonstrating that bonds of friendship and solidarity can open doors to a more prosperous and promising future.

🤝 The Importance of AYNI in the Community: The compadres and comadres festival is also deeply rooted in the practice of AYNI, which is reciprocity and solidarity among all members of the community. AYNI, based on the principle of "give and take," is essential for maintaining cohesion and harmony in Cusqueñan society. In an AYLLU, which is a group of families living in a territory and considering themselves a large spiritual family, the bonds of friendship and solidarity between compadres and comadres strengthen this sense of community and mutual collaboration.

🎉 A Celebration for Everyone: On this day, we celebrate not only the magic of the comadres but also the strength of the bonds among community members, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the foundations of a society where unity is essential through AYNI. It is a reminder that, through generosity, creativity, and solidarity, we can build a more united world full of opportunities for all.

🎊 Come and Join the Celebration! We invite you to be part of this unique celebration, where joy and camaraderie merge in an explosion of colors and smiles. May this day be filled with laughter, hugs, and unforgettable moments with your compadres and comadres! Happy day of compadres and comadres to all! 🎉🌟

🌎🚂✨ Exploring the Depths of Machu Picchu: Backstory, Challenges, and Commitment ✨🚂🌎

Dear community of travelers and enthusiasts of cultural richness,

In this new chapter of our journey at Machu Picchu, we find ourselves facing a journey altered by unexpected circumstances. This message aims to shed light on the complexity of the situation, providing you with a detailed perspective that satisfies your love for reading:

Behind the Scenes: A Strike Echoing in the Mountains

On January 25, Aguas Calientes, the town you reach to visit Machu Picchu, witnessed an indefinite strike. The cause? The online sale of tickets by the company Joinus. However, the true essence is hidden in the deepest layers of this narrative and personal and political interests.

Impact on Your Journey: Crucial Details to Consider

🚂 Temporary Suspension of Railway Services: The tracks connecting Ollantaytambo, Aguas Calientes, and Hidroeléctrica have temporarily ceased, creating a scenario that demands caution and understanding.

🌐 Stay Informed Constantly: The situation is dynamic. Stay connected to our social media and embassy updates for real-time details.

Behind the Protest: A Complicated Backstory

The Colectivo Popular Machu Picchu leads the protest, expressing disagreement with the privatization of ticket sales. Apparently, a noble cause that looks out for those of us who make a living from tourism, but it is far from the truth. How does it influence your planned discovery experience?

Guide to Navigate the Protest: Practical Tips

📍 Contact Local Authorities: If you are in Aguas Calientes, local authorities, your tour company, or the hotel reception can guide you on exit options.

🚆 Train Travel Plans: Were you planning to use the train? Your tourism service provider will inform you about options to reschedule or refund your trip.

Business and Tourism Perspective: A Commitment to Integrity

From the tourist guild of Cusco, we express our concern and support the government's decision to implement an electronic and transparent ticketing system. This not only eliminates potential malpractices but also ensures that revenues are used appropriately.

A Call to Action: An Urgent Cry for Concrete Measures

We urgently call on authorities to take concrete and immediate measures, protecting the integrity of visitors and the livelihoods of those working in tourism in the region.

An Uncomfortable Reality: Corruption and the Challenge of Transparency

We acknowledge that corruption has allowed the entry of 90,000 tourists without registration DURING 2023, and surely the numbers have been higher in previous years, a situation currently under investigation. This adds complexity and emphasizes the need for reforms in management. Moreover, it is not the first time that social leaders of the town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu) have provoked the blockade of tourist access. Many visitors do not understand why a town whose income depends 100% on tourism takes actions that greatly affect this industry.

Conclusion: Beyond the Stones, a Commitment to Heritage

Machu Picchu is not only an archaeological treasure but also a reflection of our responsibility towards it. Although we face challenges, we must remember that this heritage belongs to everyone and deserves to be protected with integrity for future generations.

We hope that these events do not continue to negatively impact our reputation as a global tourist destination. Therefore, we recommend that you hire serious and service-oriented tourism companies to ensure you do not miss the opportunity to visit Machu Picchu. My recommendation to guarantee your visit and avoid the risk of not being able to do so is to plan your trip with a duration in the Cusco region of about 6 to 7 days. This way, in case of protests, you will have several options to change the date of your visit. If you need further guidance, feel free to contact us.

We will continue to share detailed updates so you can plan your trip with confidence. 🌟🏞️✈️ .

🍲 And what about its cuisine, globally renowned as one of the best? Discover the fascinating story of how Peru became the global leader in the blueberry industry! 🌐🍇

Carlos Gereda, the visionary founder of Inka’s Berries, unveils the thrilling journey that led to establishing a thriving blueberry industry in the arid lands of the Peruvian coast. 🏜️💙

In 2002, inspired by the success of the blueberry industry in Chile, Gereda, a student of Engineering and Business Management, decided to challenge the belief that blueberries couldn't be grown in Peru due to the lack of chilling hours. Determined, he explored alternatives of plant varieties capable of thriving in the warm climate of the Peruvian coast.

Through collaborations with the Biotechnology Institute of the National Agrarian University La Molina, Gereda conducted experiments with over 10,000 plants of 14 different varieties, finally discovering that four of them, particularly the Biloxi variety, were ideal for cultivation in Peru.

In 2009, backed by advances in in vitro cloning by the Biotechnology Institute, Gereda founded Inka's Berries and began supplying local agricultural companies, marking the beginning of the Peruvian blueberry revolution. 🇵🇪🌱

Success not only lies in the quality of the blueberries but also in Peru's shrewd strategy. By becoming a key player in the global market, Peru leverages its climatic advantage, allowing it to produce blueberries throughout the year, unlike its competitors such as the United States and China, which have more limited seasonal cycles. 🌞🌍

Furthermore, with highly efficient production, Peru achieves a productivity of 13 tons per hectare, surpassing the world leader, the United States, which produces only eight tons per hectare. A testament to the ingenuity and perseverance that made Peru the world's top blueberry producer. 🚀🌿

This achievement not only highlights the economic impact but also Peru's ability to lead innovation in the global agricultural industry. Stay tuned for more discoveries on how Peru continues to make its mark in the world of blueberries! 🌟🔍 #
